... No, not dead (but almost). That is, DEd (or Doctor Educationis). After nearly five years of hard work and some 500 pages later, my promoter (advisor) informed me today by email that my doctoral thesis has passed through three external examiners and has been accepted by the Promotions Committee of the Faculty (of Education, formerly, University of Port Elizabeth-cum-Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, [South Africa, of course]) on the recommendation of the examiners, the promoter and the faculty. It has been a wonderful experience.

I share this information simply to support those who are engaged in the same journey and to say to them that no matter how long the trip will be, there will be an end to it! Those who are thinking about taking the plunge, do it! You will love it, if you really care about your subject of study.

    Thanks

Many thanks to all of you for your good wishes.

No major plans, yet. May be it is time for another degree. Perhaps, try out the non-accredited route and compare. What the hay, life is a trek!

    Congratulations Kenneth on being Phinished!

It would be neat if you and Bill could scan your South African Diplomas when they arrive so we could see them. Ric Walston's from PUCHE looked interesting.

Sounds like quite a lot of work and a long journey.

    Thanks, North,

I'll see what I can do with it. I understand that the diploma will reflect the fact that my studies were conducted under the jurisdiction of UPE and that the degree is being awarded by NMMU. It is interesting that I am the absolute last of the UPEers and the first of the NMMUers. May be I just koined something here!

I'm excited to hear from someone who's completed a remote research degree from NMMU as it's one of the ones I'm looking at for a MEd by research. Can you recommend a responsive contact there?

    Thanks,

    Greetings

    Warguns et al,

I also found it strange that UPE never mentioned the DEd qualification on their website, but I suspect they stopped updating the text of their website in anticipation of the merger that led to the creation of NMMU.

As you mentioned, NMMU lists the DEd as one of their qualifications, and the pdf file that lists it is one that show "university" programs--as opposed to old "technikon" programs, which references the old UPE programs.

Speaking of the DEd, other than Harvard, does any US institution use the designation to anyone's knowledge here?

Also, thanks to all who had kind words to share since my last posting.

    Kenneth
