    Hello All,

What are your experiences with using RateMyProfessor.com

    1) Have you rated your professors?
    2) Have you been rated as a professor?
-- If you have been rated, do you read the reviews about yourself?
    -- Has it helped you?
    3) Have you used this site to look-up a professor?
    4) Do you solicit your students to make contributions to the site?

Just interested in your opinions and feedback.

    Thanks, David

It's a train wreck! Let's stop and look at it!

I know that using ratemyprofessor.com isn't the professional thing to do, but it's sort of like a train wreck: Everybody just has to stop and look at it. lol

If a professor only has one or two black eyes, then credence probably shouldn't be given to it because it's probably just an angry student who got a low grade. However, if a professor has consistent black marks, then it might be relevant. But then again, one person could make multiple postings under different names -- so that's why it's not a professional way to evaluate professors. It doesn't have real legitimacy. Nonetheless, reading the comments can give a somewhat accurate picture of what to expect.

Too funny. I like some of the video replies from the professors. Classic.

We sure are self-important aren't we?

Not sure if my contribution helps, but here you go:

No. This country is obsessed with ratings and rankings. I believe that it is neither fair nor possible to rate a human being, using a couple of primitive scales and comment sections.

The average student probably spends little more time filling out these forms than writing a comment on Youtube or espn.com. The comments I saw on the website did not look very helpful.

Plus, any class I have ever taken anywhere has asked for feedback at the end of the term. Some professors even asked for feedback during the term. This method is much more useful because it gathers feedback from everyone, and not just from a few people enthusiastic or angry enough to register with a website.

Well yes. After reading this topic. ;)

Don't have any. But I would discourage students from using the site (see 1). As a professor, I would always prefer if the students talked to me if something bothered me.

    This feedback is interesting.

I found this site when I googled a friend of mine that I knew was a professor. His ratings started high then cratered. I thought it was interesting but did not place a lot of stock in it due to the "disgruntled student" issue mentioned earlier. I did however wonder what others thought. With the ebay society we have, I was wondering what everyone thought.

    Thanks!

    1) Have you rated your professors?
May have rated 1 or 2 in the past. It's been years though. Don't even remember what I said, or if it was positive or negative.

    2) Have you been rated as a professor?
    N/A

    3) Have you used this site to look-up a professor?
I have; mainly to see what their positive feedback indicated. The negative comments can come from somebody disgruntled over any number of reasons. The main things I look for is feedback on the structure of their assignments / exams, whether the professor is good at staying organized and communicating clearly / in a timely manner, etc.

    4) Do you solicit your students to make contributions to the site?
    N/A

    No..see it as a waste

Once was referred to a posting by "allegedly" a student of mine. Was totally false as the dates were wrong and I hadn't ever taught that course. Wrote them and it was gone.

Was shocked to find that in an all male class I taught for 3 years someone rated me as "HOT." Not that there is anything wrong with that (Seinfeld, 90s)

    1) Have you rated your professors? No, but I didn't think about it! I might.

LOL I just looked for the first time, only 1 student rated me though, and it is 2 years old. I might check now and then!
    3) Have you used this site to look-up a professor? No, but I will lol.
    4) Do you solicit your students to make contributions to the site? uhh....heck no.
