And you know...this makes excellent sense to me - wonderful mission focus ;)

And if a strudent has shown up by the time the 10-day report is submitted, THEY are dropped (and their financial aid is pulled). I'm pretty sure records of attendance and standards are part of being RA.

Forgive me if I'm wrong. Are you saying that you teach at UOP? Wow, do the faculty know how you feel about their system.

If the school is as bad as you say why are you wasting your time there?

Is it possible that the students are not getting adequate teaching from you?

I've always thought that ones frustration can be reflected in their personality and actions.

As far as the other PT faculty members that share the same opinions as you, I say shame on them. All they do is take a paycheck and bitched about how something is wrong but do nothing to rectify the situation. Damn, are there more to reveal?

Wannabe...some maturity might be in order...the same applies to the FT staff...which is why they hold a position for an average of 2 years - then move on.

John Sperling, Chair and CEO of the Apollo Group that owns UOP: “This is a corporation, not a social entity. Coming here is not a rite of passage. We are not trying to develop their value systems or go in for that ‘expand their minds’ bullshit.” ("Phoenix Ascending,” Ana Marie Cox, In These Times, May 13, 2002.)"

I hope that you mean "I taught there." If you are a current faculty member and you openly speak of UoP the way to you, my guess is that you wouldn't be around long.

I suppose that if you were willing to take the $900 or whatever it is to take the 5 week class, that you don't have TOO much of a problem with what goes on over there?

ETA: If you teach / taught there, I'm glad that your class is that easy. Obviously I didn't have you for any classes. Shame on your for not making your students work for their grade like I did.

Ok, I'm going to ignore the maturity part. My question is this and I understand the CEO perspective. Why are you teaching at a facility that you and others complains about? I really don't accept the premise that people work for 2 years and then move on. It seem to me that you and the others are doing a disservice condoning the philosophy of the CEO. Since it'd been 4 years ago that this CEO made this comment. What's change? I'm not trying to single you out, but the reason that I'm concern is some people has the tendency to say things and do nothing about it. I realize how powerless we are against the powerful.

I don't know, I suppose you trying in your own way to educate the people how bad something is without damaging your position. As for myself, I submit, I was not aware of the school policy. I certainly wouldn't want to go to a school that has this attitude.

Is this really a good thing? For-profit schools seem to attract students for their short completion times. Not only at the B.S level but at the Master's and Phd levels.

In theory, one could finish a B.S (3), M.S (1) and PhD(3) in 7 years part time while traditional schools require about 10 years full time for the same degrees. What is the magic formulat that for-profits have found to make this possible?

Compare a four-star restaurant menu with a fast food joint ;)

Con: Seriously, arguably, you can make the point about the quality of the "outcomes" - and spare me the "I feel I'm as good as anybody" - why do you think the NG has to "train-up" for 90 days before they deploy? One weekend a month does not a soldier make.

Pro: Traditional academics tend not to consider that utilizing technology can considerably shorten the process - I submit that any NSU/NCU doctoral candidate can get more out of their digital databases that a FT PhD student could at the library 10 years ago. Technology, properly applied, is an "intellectual multiplier".

Jim-would you say your evidence is based upon your own experience as a teacher or as a student?

Jim...the truth has set you free! So..........after all these month of trashing the FP model now we discover that your ethical model is not so skewed that you won't accept a check from the same. Interesting. I will say that your admission certainly devalues the opinions that you have offered on this forum. Beyond that I love it when a prediction comes true. Reference the second post on this thread. Have a grrrrrrrrreat day.

Of the four "points" you offer in your paragraph I ask: "Are you or have you had the benefit of a UoP education?" ;)

I guess some people are finding out who you really are. Damn, damn, damn, I was hoping to ask you to be my mentor. Now, I have to look around some more.

I know, four-star restaurants are just so not-for-profit! OMG If they became for-profit, their quality would go down! Could you imagine going to a restaurant that is for-profit? Blasphemy!
    ;) :D

Wow - since this thread has turned into an "I Love Jim" rant (obviously somehow related to the original question....), can we just declare the junior high school insults and baiting over?

Jim's probably just amused, and all of this makes for great theater. But honestly, after the popcorn runs out, this gets tiresome.

No, Jim is a bit tired of the HS behavior.

I think it's clear that I am not worthy of these gents and that they can better spend their time communicating with each other.

Honestly, I have not been around long enough to make a judgement about anybody. What I don't understand's you are constantly critizing other people opinions and belitting them like you are some G**. We all are entitled to our opinions no matter how juvenile it may sound. I, for one think you have alot of things to offer us. I just think sometimes you have to let people have their say. Even if it sound idiotic to you, it may be something someone else can relate too.

Come on don't be a spoiled brat.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion - and I think that much of the belittling is in the eyes of the beholder.

I'm 51, retired from the army (where I was an instructor at an RA service school) and currently a tenured faculty in higher ed. Just as many of you have an edge on your peers with 10 years less experience and they on their peers with 10 years less experience, I may have an edge on some of you.

I don't mind adding to your info, but I'm really not interested (and not getting paid) to carry anyone up the mountain - and some of the comments put me in mind of the thread from degreediscussion about the low level of discourse here.

Feel free to disregard anything I say that you do not agree with.

Sir, I think you do care and I am grateful for someone like you that can share their experience, strenght and hope.

I will speak for myself- I have a long road ahead of me and any help that I can get to make that road smooth will definetly loosen my burden. I want to be like those that accomplished their dreams. I've stumbled across this forum by accident. I was enthused by the stories and helps the people here were giving. I could not believe that there were an opportunity for me to take my life to a higher level. I have never considered or respected the higher level of education. After all, I am living comfortable. But seeing the joy and happiness of the people actually going after their degree has shown me that I can do it too. Yes, I am humble to say that I do not have a degree. Do I need one probably not. But the personal satisfaction of having one would make me feel good. I need not say more.
