Also, UNEM requires some residency. I would say that between their $16K tuition, airfare to Cost Rica, and room and board for residency that Australian schools make a better bargain. And....even MIGS is a better bargain.

Finally, I got hold of a UNEM graduate!

Wes, thank you for directing me to the web page containing information of UNEM graduates. However, the correct link to the page is: http://www.sfbc.edu/faculty.htm.

I was able to get hold of Dr. Palmer. He had very high opinions about UNEM. However, he graduated before the name change, when the unveristy used to be called University of San Jose.

Dr. Palmer is acting as the Supervisor for a few students who are currently enrolled in the program. He encouraged me to apply immediately. I am contempleting whether I should spend the $16K or select a "cheaper" Australian program.

I have been unable to get hold of another graduate, Dr. Riggs or a candidate, Ms. Seville. However, I have left messages for both of them requesting a return phone call.

I have posted a message on a "gringo" message board in Costa Rica. One contact, a resident of San Jose, informed me that she has not heard anything about UNEM!

I will keep you all posted.

Steve, If money is an issue I would think that you could find some more well known and affordable Ph.D. programs through Australian or South African programs.

    Good luck!

    North,

Money is always an issue, unless an employer is paying for the schooling.

I relaize that the cost of a UNEM program is substantially cheaper than an accredited U.S. program. However, there is nothing wrong with exploring other viable alternatives. As the head parrott, Jimmy Buffett once said, "you always gotta have a backup plan!"

North, it seems to me that you have done more research on the Australian and South African Ph. D. programs. Would you care to share with me your findings?

In your opinion, what Australian univeristy would be a better choice? Additionally, do you know anything about any New Zealand Ph. D. programs?

    Dear Steve,

    Greetings!

Could you please provide me with the URL of that "gringo" message board in Costa Rica? I have only posted at soc.costa-rica.culture from Usenet.

    My best regards,

I concur about the money issue. [IMG]

If you want to know about the South African programs and Australian for that matter, you want to talk to Tom Head. I know very little other than having investigated SATS/UZululand in terms of theology degrees and having read other's posts.

I believe there are at least a couple of people doing a Ph.D. through Potch in SA and several others who have done a great deal of research.

What I would do is start a separate thread about SA & Australian doctorates. Ask specific questions with regard to the field you are intersted in.

As I have mentioned earlier, if you are in no hurry I would wait and see if NCU makes it. If they do they are substantially cheaper than other US options. Now, if someone can give you a good SA or Australian then that may have more prestige than a relative newcomer to education like NCU.

    Good luck!!
