Just curious whether UMI (www.umi.com) accept non accredited dissertations (i.e. academic institutions) in their library.

    Thanks for your feedback.

It is my understanding that UMI no longer accepts dissertations from unaccredited schools. I believe that they did at one time (as research abstracts), but I think that the practice was discontinued some time ago.

    Cheers,

Tony's right, they don't. They accepted some in the past, but dropped the practice when so many degree mills popped up. According to a UMI rep I spoke with last year, they get more than 55,000 dissertations annually, and simply cannot review them. They rely upon the accrediting agencies to ensure a sufficient level of quality in doctoral-granting schools. Seems reasonable, although it excludes some fine work being done by some students at some unaccredited schools. And I'm sure it allows for some below-standard work to be published.

That is correct. I quote UMI web site:

"UMI publishes dissertations and theses only from accredited institutions and only with a signed publishing agreement from each author. This page provides links to our brochures on publishing your thesis or dissertation."

BTW, I passed my final oral defense few weeks ago and received the dissertation approval from my committee today following minor adjustments. I finally got rid of the ABD status... what a relief !!!!
