Lifelong Republican, protege of Paul Wolfowitz, friend of Condoleezzaa Rice, and George W Bush political appointee says we should just ignore everything the Republican Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates say about foreign policy and trust that they will just keep doing what most previous administrations have done because, well, that’s what most of them have done. Stated somewhat differently, they are lying to you and everybody knows they are lying to you, so just ignoring their lies and trust that they will do the right thing because, well, reasons.

Because that is what politicians (including Democrats) do. I was amused at the number things Democrats criticized the Trump Administration for but when they got in they quietly kept them/doing them.

Nonsense. Most politicians (even Republican ones) had foreign policy generally consistent with their rhetoric. Even leaked confidential communications (like what Chelsea Manning stole and leaked) generally confirm that. The article assumes unprecedented levels of duplicity by Trump/Vance ticket. Not completely unfounded assumption, but...

I can only imagine Trump's advisors discussing with Trump his vice presidential options.

"Mr. President sir, we can go in one of two directions here. We could balance the ticket with a running mate who will expand your support to voters you're weaker with. Or we could double down and choose a candidate with maximally Trumpy appeal to Trump districts."

"I see. Very interesting. You know, I like this 'Trumpy Trump' direction. Forget the other direction, forget it. In fact – how's this – bring me the most 'Trumpy Trump' candidate you can find. That's what you do. 'Trumpy Trump.'"

Though he (Vance) does have a diverse marriage and bi racial children. I read his wife is still Hindu.

Why Trump Suddenly Thinks Picking J.D. Vance Was a Mistake (Edith Olmsted, The New Republic, July 22, 2024)

Who knows if that alleged rationale is true but if it is it was incredibly stupid.
I would have picked Nikki Haley or Marco Rubio. Those are the two that made sense.

Politicians, including Biden change their mind and stand on issues.
    So time will show.

Those would have been effective choices who would expand his electorate! Tim Scott would have been an effective choice both with the conservative base and with swing voters. He seems hard not to like and respect.

In Ohio, JD Vance implied tribes were 'enemy,' and called Indigenous Peoples' Day 'fake' (Frank Vaisvilas, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 23, 2024)

Lots of Native Americans in swing states, and they're not monolithcally Democrats.
