I think the programs will be offered during the Winter Semester commencing Dec.5th.

    Good luck,

Ah, hrm. Well, hopefully they'll publish some information about the programs soon or else they won't have many people enrolling the first semester! I should probably email an inquiry to them.

    Thanks for the info!

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have decided on Capella for many reasons. First, I think some short residency is probably healthy. Second, the institution seems very strong and well managed. Third--and this is a subtle point--the Touro program seems a little peculiar to me. To begin with, the accreditation arrangement seems a little funny. Also, their web page/site does not look very professional. Maybe not a big deal--but just doesn't seem as well organized, put together, or managed. Just my thoughts.

Capella is a joke. You might want to rethink your decision. The "robust' environment is no more than an internet BBS like this. Hardly grad school...

Certainly one opinion. Fair enough. Could you give some real reasons for why it is a joke?

Suppose for the sake of argument that a graduate seminar *was* conducted using "an internet BBS like this". Why would use of that medium make the seminar into a "joke"?

If people's ideas are transmitted to others at a distance, I don't think that either the intervening distance or the transmission medium damages the ideas in any way.

A brilliant idea doesn't suddenly become stupid if it is written down. Or if it does, it probably wasn't very brilliant in the first place.

A good graduate course probably should concentrate on the content of what is said, rather than on the transmission medium. The latter probably works best when it is kept simple and transparent.

Interesting comment that raises other questions. For example: What really constitutes valid graduate study? After many years of distance learning---I enrolled at Nova Southeastern to experience the "magic" of the classroom experience--to hear that lecturer in person--to interact with classmates.

Actually--even the best lectures I attended were not an efficient use of time. The worst were just plain a waste of time--in spite of sitting at the feet of highly credentialed professors.

Also--graduate study beyond the MBA level can be arcane--for example, I've read academic papers and dissertations that attempt to measure linkages such as "the employee's intention to quit vs. his internal perceptions of equity", or to validate the shape of Hersey's situational leadership curve using mind numbing survery instruments. One could legitimately argue the usefulness of such research that strains the bounds of common sense --- and at the same time--the world is full of common sense managers who run their businesses just fine without a PhD or access to technical papers.

I've concluded that an accredited school that legitimately delivers a learning program, objectively measures your progress, and provides a forum for you to demonstrate a contribution of a valid piece of research is a valid graduate school. There are many experiences that I can call "a joke" but I would maintain it depends on the individual need. I don't need to burn a day in front of a professor. Likewise--when I network and experience teamwork daily in the business world--I don't need a classroom--but that may not apply to all--especially to those jsut beginning their careers.

For what it's worth, as a learner, I have experienced three years of interaction with Capella, other learners, the faculty, the administration, and the services. Nearing the final lap of my doctoral program I have had a splendid experience in all facets and am very glad I chose Capella (TGSA at the time I started).

Every endeavor and every choice will meet with challenges. The challenges I faced through my choice of Capella were minor and minimal. My program was a journey of great learning. I am pleased with and proud of my academic accomplishments.

I do not mean to infer that because of my experience, Capella is the perfect or right choice for everyone. It simply turned out to be the right choice for me.

    Gary,

Just checked the TUI web site and the
details for the new programs are now
    listed. Details at www.tourou.edu

Also ... Touro now has a "bricks and mortar" campus at Mares Island, CA. for students in
    that area. Details at www.tumi.edu

Billy, (disclaimer ... a pleased TUI MBA student.)
