Congratulations, indeed. Or as was said (19th century) at commencement ceremonies, with all the sexism of the time, "Welcome to the fellowship of honorable men."

In the synchronicity department, just last week I was sent, by a colleague who knew of my interest in the topic, a recently published report (ARI Research Note 2009-17) from the Personnel Decisions Research Institute on the "STAY" project: "Strategies to Enhance Retention" in the armed forces. The goal: "the development, implementation, and evaluation of a few promising interventions that address first-term reenlistment."

(My colleague's interest has been in learning more about how to discourage people from re-enlisting.)

Congratulations, Shawn. You can be quite proud of the accomplishment. Here's wishing you all the best in your continuing journey.

Where will you be doing your commencement?

BTW John with whom and where did your colleague serve … that’s what I thought?

More notably Shawn … my earnest congratulations on your momentous accomplishment (Ph.D., seven children, deployment, etc.), and additionally, I thank you for your recent ARNG service to our Country... OoHRah!

major56: "BTW John with whom and where did your colleague serve--that's what I thought?."

John: He served two years in the Korean War with the "Indianheads," the courageous 15th Field Artillery Battalion (2nd Infantry Division). Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Then when he was called up during Vietnam, he chose not to go, declined to make a religious objection (said it would have been hypocritical as a non-believer), and as a result spent two years in federal prison.

    Is that what you thought?

Sounds like an alibi narrative; most notably adding in the self-purported martyrdom (e.g., “…declined to make a religious objection (said it would have been hypocritical as a non-believer)…” as rationalization for the mentioned colleague being a lawbreaker, convicted felon and ex-convict. And yes John, such an affirmed declaration would have been duplicitous; applying the conscientious objector [religious] belief assertion as either an agnostic or atheist … such an action would have been a lie along with proffering a perjured declaration! And no, this wasn’t what I was thinking.

Wow, Shawn, huge congratulations to you!!!

What fabulous news. Hearing about your progress throughout your dissertation phase has been really inspirational to me. In fact, I'm defending my proposal next Monday, and when I set the date, I had remembered when you posted on here about successfully defending your proposal, and thinking wow when you did that... and now I'm at that stage myself.

Thanks for being such a great inspiration!!

That wasn’t my purpose whatsoever. Seemingly the other poster thought it was important enough and opportune, too clearly and apart add-in his colleague’s anti-military service leaning interest; and was addressed to Shawn a retired 23-year ARNG veteran. In retrospect perhaps I should have let Shawn speak to this if he so chose.

Sorry Shawn, it wasn’t my intent to takeover your thread.

Steve: "...Sorry to see your thread getting hijacked..."

John: As the hijacker, I do apologize. I get annoyed when other people do this, and now I am one. I shall try to remember to start a new thread if there is something unrelated to say. The congratulations were indeed sincere, and I sure wouldn't bet against Tiger Woods in . . . no, wait . . .
