    Very sad reality.

The whole Bay Area but they've no one to blame but themselves. Extremely restrictive zoning policies make building affordable housing nearly impossible. I remember Oakland as a small child (me, not the City). It was a completely different place back then, largely middle class and diverse. San Francisco has always been crazy expensive but the East Bay was not. Of course, other bad things happened since then including White Flight following the terrifying race riots of the Sixties. Then too, the local Lefties managed to expel all military establishments in the name (I suppose) of World Peace but the result was the loss of thousands of solid middle class jobs. Yeah, Lerner, you're right. It IS a sad story and not just the homelessness part of it. I do think the curse of the Tech Explosion made things just that much worse for everyone not a multi-millionaire but SF was founded on that sort of extreme riches scenario. Nothing has really changed I guess. Sigh.

All my life I wanted to move to the Bay Area but I could never see a way to make it work. Nowadays, I wouldn't want to.
