Probably because there are drug rehab centers with a similar name in California (and elsewhere?). Having said that, I am a proud graduate of Charter Oak High School (although I'm not sure what that says about my drug usage in the 1970s).

My choice for "of" universities in (real)South Carolina towns: University of Ninety Six and Six Mile University. (The latter one sounds like a BIG university; it has gravitas.) These should probably be technical schools, because neither name has a hyphen.

I take "lesser" states to mean "lesser, 49 states" to mean "lesser of 50 evil states."

Formerly guilty. I was an out-of-state student at Clemson University from the Sovereign Nation of North Carolina.

There is (or was?) a facility for troubled teens close to Sea World in Orlando, FL called Laurel Oaks Hospital. I went there with the International Students Association at my former Community College. We completed their ropes course as a team/camaraderie building excercise. Hmmm... Laurel Oak State College would give new meaning to a BaccaLAUREate degree. Graduates could wear Oak leaf laurels at the convocation. How's that for gravitas?

Well, if you (or another forum member) should decide to visit the South Carolina Lowcountry, I'll spring for lunch. Hey, if you're a Tiger, shouldn't you be on your way to the IPTAY golf tournament?

I should have remembered the earlier thread on Lexington University, whereat the "quiet rural atmosphere of Lexington University is conducive to the contemplative pursuit of knowledge" and where the on-campus enrollments are filled until the year 2005 (possibly because they have no campus).

This raises an interesting question, though: is it easier to get into a DL program than a residential program at schools that offer both?

To A. Ayers who said, "Hey, if you're a Tiger, shouldn't you be on your way to the IPTAY golf tournament?"

Twenty bucks a year is a lot. Do they take credit cards?

The quote above was posted in this thread by mistake. Sorry.

Well, with the exception of the "Graduate School of America" name change (Capella, and even this one is borderline), most name changes are pretty stoopid.

Imagine having ARGOSY UNIVERSITY on your diploma [IMG]

The move from Amber to Amberton struck me as a little silly.

Then there is the Darwin Awards, a celebration of the truly unhelpable.

Tracy reported that Amber University has changed its name to Amberton. I thought this might be an obscure joke that I didn't understand, but the website proudly reports that the deed was done on March 20, 2001, because their research showed "Amber" suggested a person's name, a jewel, or a color.

So I did a Google search for "Amberton" and the first ten items were:
    1. A park in Bakersfield
    2. A housing estate in Georgia
    3. A winery in Australia
    4. An apartment house in Illinois
    5. A housing estate in California
    6. An apartment house in Tampa
    7. A housing estate in Atlanta
    8. A faculty member at Chico State
    9. A street in Leeds
    10. A housing estate in Florida.

    Go figure.

For me, this change makes the Sarasota-into-Argosy one look good by comparison.

    Dear John,

    Greetings!

As I said in one of my postings, I think that Alberton Univesity as opposed to Amberton University is a much better name. Alberton, among other reasons, is the name of places in the United States, Canada, South Africa, etc., making Alberton sound a little bit more international. And the best (or saddest) part of it is that Alberton is just a letter appart from Amberton.

    My best regards,

Yeah, they should have just made it something like University College Maryland like University College London (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/). Incidentally, the University of the West Indies (UWI) started out as a University College of the University of London - The University College of the West Indies (UCWI)
