Taylor & Francis and Wiley will be making millions with their new partnership agreements. Taylor & Francis made an agreement with Microsoft, and Wiley made an agreement with an undisclosed company. AI will be trained using the research published by these companies.

As expected, academic researchers are furious. They did the work and provided the research to these publishers without compensation. In some cases, they paid these journals thousands of dollars for their articles to be open access. Academics are also expected to be peer reviewers for free. Universities have to spend millions on subscriptions just so that their students and faculty don't have to pay $30 every time they need to read a research article.

Another worrisome part of all of this is that AI will potentially be trained on fake data. More than 10,000 articles were retracted in 2023.
