Stature of ACBSP Accreditation?

  1. Thank you; that was an interesting article and it did address my original question, although in a indirect way.

Here is the most relevant part: "Both are recognized by CHEA, the agency that assures quality in accreditation. They differ in that ACBSP emphasizes excellence in teaching over research (though it stresses the importance of research to good teaching), while AACSB expects more research productivity from its member programs. Members of ACBSP tend to be smaller institutions with more limited budgets which service unique populations, offer more generous admissions and credit transfer policies, and follow more flexible curricular formats."

This is basically what everyone else has been saying about the two. But it does assure me that the ACBSP is a solid accreditation. Thanks

Michael the school below holds both accreditations. Which leads me to believ that they find ACBSP as providing some benefit.

Perhaps providing a dual specialized accredited institution the distinct marketing advantage of being accredited by two organizations (e.g., for AACSB institutions this is the prospect to be recognized for teaching excellence and research excellence). APU /AMU and WGU continue to hold dual accreditations … both regional and national accreditation (RA and DETC). And several European universities hold dual and some even triple accreditations (e.g., AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS). On the other hand, when does it end?

This school became accredited by AACSB in 2007, so they likely had ACBSP accreditation prior to earning it from AACSB. It will be interesting to see if they maintain ACBSP accreditation.

There are plenty of other schools, but IMO not of quality (with some exceptions).

The ignorance is in industry, mostly by HR folks, but that is starting to change with all of the online schools. I think it is improtant in industry as well as academia.

Who says that NCU is "one of the lowest regarded RA schools?"

No, ACBSP accreditation doesn't raise the reputation of the school for me; it just tells me what type of business model they are using and the type of business degrees they offer. It really doesn't even tell me much about the type of faculty they have recruited. (They probably have fewer narcissists but who knows...?)

    probably?:D

  11. I read that on some posts at this BB. Actually, on some replies to my other questions. However, I am in the PhD program there and love it...and it's no cakewalk. Didn't you accuse them of being "merchant scholars"? Was that you or someone else, can't remember.

The norm had been for ACBSP schools that achieve AACSB to drop the former. Example? Abilene Christian and several state schools.

Do you recall any specifics of the arguments against NCU?

  14. No, Dave, I'm sorry I can't remember exactly which thread those were on. Gettin old, I guess. I'll try to poke around and find the posts. Now where did I put my car keys....

I'm sorry that I am picking up on the end of this discussion. I thought it was very interesting that you mentioned the 2 schools that I considered before deciding on Jacksonville State University. Initially, I was set on Chadron State because the price was 2-3 thousand less than JSU. Fortunately, someone on this forum educated me on the difference between the accreditation of the 2 schools.

Not that I think ACBSP is not worthwhile, but once I realized that AACSB was the gold standard, it did not make sense for me to choose the lesser... especially since my company tuition reimbursement was going to be able to fully cover either school's tuition. Plus, I have aspirations to teach, at least part-time, someday and I now realize the advantage that having an AACSB MBA will give me...

My experience with JSU has been great. I have 2 more classes this Spring and then I will graduate in April. The classes are very writing intensive. As to the question over faculty involvement... I have had 8 courses and all 8 courses have been fully taught by full-time faculty professors. In fact, I am pretty sure that they have all been tenured...

Anyway... I thought I would share my experience. JSU is a great option for a relatively inexpensive, but still very demanding, AACSB MBA...

  16. Went to the JSU website and was very impressed. I wish JSU offered online doctorates, I would be very interested.

Thanks for chiming in -- I know they keep you busy. I was beginning to think about MBA options that fit my tuition benefit around the time you were posting about your decision. I've taken undergrad classes at Chadron so I have experience with them, while JSU is appealing too. I'm concerned about electives (not enough choices) and wonder what your experience has been.
