    According to ACBSP's accreditation standards:
So SMC apparently demonstrated that they have some form of official recognition in Switzerland, and ACBSP apparently accepted this as equivalent to US regional accreditation. However, it does not appear that ACBSP's evaluation process for "RA-equivalence" is particularly rigorous. ACBSP's acceptance of SMC as RA-equivalent is certainly a plus, but it does not guarantee that SMC degrees will be accepted as RA-equivalent by anyone else.

Of course, demonstrating "equivalence with US regional accreditation" is a potential pitfall with a degree from almost any foreign school -- even for undoubtedly equivalent schools like the University of Toronto or Oxford University. If you need an absolute guarantee that a degree will be accepted without hesitation as equivalent to US RA, then you need a degree from a US RA school, or from one of the relatively few foreign schools with US RA.

No they don't. They have no recognition in Switzerland.

"As I understand it, SMC's problem with institutional accreditation is that in Switzerland it's not possible for a standalone business school to be accredited at the federal level, because of requirements like needing a hundred full time faculty members, etc."

Steve, is this what they told you?

The ACBSP standards call for foreign schools to demonstrate either (1) recognition, or (2) accreditation, or (3) the right to grant degrees.

SMC may not have (1) recognition, or (2) accreditation from the government of Switzerland.

However, my understanding is that SMC is based in the Swiss Canton of Zug, and that Zug exempts most or all degree-granting institutions from regulation (in the same way that many US states exempt religious degree programs from regulation). So it is perfectly legal for anyone to establish a school and grant degrees in Zug (just as it is perfectly legal to for anyone to establish a religious school and issue religious degrees in many US states).

So SMC presumably was able to demonstrate (3) the right to grant degrees, and thereby meet the ACBSP definition of "RA-equivalence".

Will ACBSP's acceptance of SMC as RA-equivalent convince others that SMC is RA-equivalent? Maybe, or maybe not.
