I've found that both Republicans and Democrats are capable of being jerks. It's not like there is a qualification exam to get in. You check a box and boom, you're a party member. Some of the best bosses and colleagues I've ever had were Republicans. Some of the worst I had were democrats. And vice versa.

    Yes. This.

A lot of these jobs pay better than minimum wage, too. There's a new fast food joint that just opened near me a few weeks ago. They are advertising $9/hr.

I was out driving a few weeks ago and Dunkin Donuts was advertising for PT and FT help with starting pay of $9.75. Just down the road Aldi was hiring cashiers starting at $11.50.

The last time I was in Florida I stopped at a Burger King which was offering $500 sign on bonuses to crew members (I believe the fine print said you had to stay there for at least six months).

I will say that I've noticed a pretty significant trend at these places shifting from teenagers to, well, non-teenagers. Sometimes people old enough to be retirees (even if they aren't actually retired). Sometimes middle aged people. When I used to be a McDonalds morning regular the McDonalds where I stopped never seemed to have anyone under the age of 40 working there. Not during the summer. Not on weekends. Never.

When I worked at McDs the high school workforce had to be a nightmare to manage. Maybe some of these places just started hiring adults and hoped for less high school drama. But there are definitely jobs out there in the minimum wage world.

And if you reach the end of high school and can't even land a job at a Jimmy Johns then you have five solid options available to you: USN, USMC, USAF, USA, USCG

    Fixed it! ;)

And we should note that something like only 30% of kids are even able to pass the physical and mental tests to enlist in the military.

    But your point stands.

    Hi,
Hey, I am impressed that you all figured out that I do not like Republicans from my last post. Really, I didn't think even Trump under one of his many aliases on one of his many forums he trolls on would would touch a post like that but there you go. As far as fast food wages go, I saw a white castle near my house that was had a sign offering 16$ an hour to work there. I didn't go in to see what it was all about but, I do remember the Castle's CEO last year, complaining that the minimum wage was too high, I know from experience that, in the past, white castle is not a nice place to work. However, maybe he saw the writing on the wall and came down from the mountain and all that.

    Thanks,

    Brant

Not at all, there is my token Republican friend.

I've heard that. But I believe that is based upon the military's induction reject rate. So, only 30% of those who approach a recruiter with a serious inquiry actually go from showing up at MEPS to departing to basic training.

I was never a recruiter. But I did do RAP (Recruiter Assistance Program) for a week and HARP (Hometown Area Recruiting Program) for two weeks. During my three weeks sitting in that recruiting office I can tell you that the majority of people who wonder in are screwballs. You get the military obsessed weirdos wandering in (especially during the day while the normal ones are at school or work).

The physical test just to get in isn't that rigorous. Even my short, fat, flat-footed self got in without much difficulty. But recruiters are like a bug zapper for people with criminal records and massive chips on their shoulder. During that first week I saw nearly 50 people come through (including just casual encounters). Five went down to MEPS for screening. Two signed a contract.

Then again, it seems like everyone and their brother is allergic to peanuts and on ADHD medication these days so maybe that 30% is representative of the larger population.

In any case, we always used to just send the really stupid ones to the Army and the really crazy ones to the Marines. Plenty of each to go around.

Touche. You would think you have it made being in a combat unit and never falling out but, the two most successful people I know in the military as far as enlisted goes was our clerk, who never went to the field due to the fact that he would take a hammer and break his leg when asked, so they made him clerk. And another guy I just talked to, who went to Korea at the same time as me and when asked to if he could run 5 miles said no way I could do that. Me was 2nd in the brigade run, had 2nd highest GT score in the unit, and never made it past E2 in that unit despite being in a combat unit and technically doing combat duty on the DMZ. SO THERE YOU GO ANOTHER STORY. Lotta 2's there.
