I think Schroedinger was checking obsessively to see if his cat was in the fridge. When he poked his head in to check for the seventh time, tragically, the cat was in there and quite deceased. At that moment of discovery, an apple rolled off a shelf and bonked him on the head simultaneously with the light coming on, which led him to conceive of a reliable stock market predictor (dead cat bounce). This predictor enabled him to earn enough money to study physics...and the rest is history. (That's the way I heard it.)
