    Hey Friendorfoe,

Have you checked out the online certificate in Security Management and Homelande Security at UMASS-Lowell? Good school, good name recognition, and at 280 per credit hour, it looks like the whole thing would cost about $5000.

    Thanks guys.

TCord, yeah I checked out UMass. Michigan State is ........how shall I say this (street vernacular) the sh*t when it comes to criminal justice and reputation thereof. Also MSU has been recognized as one of 4 universities for research excellence. Sweet. So for $3,000 it may be worth it.

Re: Re: Questions about Certificate in Homeland Security

Since 2003, the US Department of Homeland Security - Science & Technology Directorate has established partnerships with US universities, certifying some as being "Homeland Security Centers of Excellence", or "HS Centers" (this program parallels what the NSA has done with respect to identifying university centers of excellence in information systems security). The first in the nation was at USC.

I would be inclined to stick to those schools as DHS certification will probably become the gold standard, just as NSA certification has.

The DHS Centers of Excellence list:

It's important to note that these programs are generally multidisciplinary, dealing with both man-made and naturally-occurring threats. Some early programs established after 9/11 approached Homeland Security as being strictly a terrorism problem, and relegated their programs to being a criminal justice specialty. Katrina has changed that for sure.
