Hi, I'm new to the forum. Any thoughts about the B.S. in Software Development at SNHU? Am looking into going back to school, always wanted to get a job as a programmer.

Thanks, and glad to be here!!

    Hi, Wildcard,

Are you currently in the IT field? My husband is a software developer and while I don't know much about SNHU program, I can tell you about his experiences and the road he took to become a programmer. When he was in college a Google rep at a career fair suggested to him getting a job at a help desk position first because you learn so many valuable skills in terms of trouble shooting, critical thinking, etc. His first job was at Dell doing help desk support over the phone. Within 6 months, he found his first entry level as a programmer. Though, in full admission, he did get this job because of one of his professors in college. What he has found on his job search, unless you are one of the absolute best in programming, the larger more desirable programming firms require a bachelor's degree. From what we have found they don't care too much where it is from. Just that you have that piece of paper. One of my husband's former co-workers has been programming for 30 years and is a decent programmer. But he never got a college degree so most places will not interview him. He has had luck at a few places but his prospects are limited.

If you are already in IT, then that is a great step. Next you want to work on the bachelor's degree in a computer related area but also build up your skills/portfolio outside of that degree. You will need to prove you are current and knowledgable on programming techniques and abilities.
