The school's accreditation has been downgraded and they have until June 1 to show progress in leadership, documentation and fiscal reports.

Interesting to me at least is that there is a "who you know" element to whether or not the college gets some wiggle room.

I think that WASC's community college commission might have a bug up its butt. (Not necessarily a bad thing.)

My local College of San Mateo was put on warning a few months ago for reasons that apparently had nothing to do with student instruction. The commission didn't think that the community college district had satisfactory planning or something like that. So the district wrote a new plan and the college was taken off warning.

If that could happen to what is widely considered one of the state's better community colleges, I imagine that it's happening elsewhere.

During the latter years of the Bush regime the Dept. of Education was becoming a little bizarre, with conservative activists (ACTA et al) loudly insisting that the regional accreditors were worse than worthless. So maybe the WASC JC comission was feeling some pressure be more activist in order to justify its own existence.
