Potchefstroom University (South Africa, GAAP) offers research degrees in religion/theology via its accredited UK satellite school, Greenwich School of Theology. All work is completed through GST, examined by promoters from both GST and PU, with the degree awarded by PU.

This program is recommended by Dr. Bear as an excellent opportunity to earn a credible and recognized doctorate in religion or theology.

I was admitted into the Ph.D. (practical theology) program in Sept. 2000, and have thus far found it to be challenging and rewarding.

Does anyone have experience with similar programs?

    Russell,

I've e-mailed them twice and haven't gotten a reply. Any suggestions?

    Michael:

The contact person for this program is Dr. Byron Evans (Dean of GST) at [[email protected]], or you may also contact Dr. Chris Killacky (GST Registrar) at [[email protected]].

In my correspondence with them they are usually quite prompt in responding. By all means try again.

In March 2000 the master's tuition was 1900 pounds sterling, about $2800.00. Keep in mind that GST is a satellite school of, and accredited by, Potchefstroom. PU is 130 years old, is an old established residential university, and meets GAAP criteria. PU offers degrees both residentially and via distance learning.

GST offers no degrees of its own, as it is not a degree granting institution. As an accredited school of PU (13 schools are accredited by PU), all degrees are awarded by PU. Check their website out at www.puk.ac.za .

Just a few days ago I received an email from GST indicating that the Ph.D. was:
Registration Fee: £75-00, total course fee for Ph.D. £2800 ($4016 USD, currently)

Thanks. I just received an e-mail from Dr. Evans there. He said it was now 2300 pounds. However, I don't meet the criteria for admissions to a doctorate program. One must have a theological master's per the information he sent me.

I don't plan on going back to get another master's degree. I was looking to do an interdisciplinary type dissertation that would merge business management and Christian ethics.

I have looked at Union and that might be the only alternative I can see out there at this time. Maybe others have more suggestions.

    Thanks, Bing

This is correct Bing. Admission into the Ph.D. program requires a master's in the same discipline one will be researching and writing the thesis. The PU Ph.D. is a research degree (thesis only, 80,000 words) which builds on one's master's degree.

When I entered the program in Sept. 2000, the Ph.D. tuition was 2200 pounds, with a 75 pound application fee---around $3500.00.

Keep in mind also that the tuition is based on PU's tuition, and the South African Rand. Currently, the currency exchange rate between the US Dollar and SA Rand is almost 8 to 1. This is advantageous for US students, making the degree programs quite reasonable.

This site says, "SATS is associated with the International Theological Seminary and is the Religious Faculty (School of Religion) of the South African campus of Newport University of California." http://www-icdl.open.ac.uk/icdl/export/africa/southafr/satheolo/inst/

If it associated with Newport then how credible is SATS?

SATS is also "accredited" or affiliated with the University of Zululand--which kind of makes me wonder about the U. of Zululand.

U of Zululand is GAAP and a real South African University. Certainly if I were intersted in doing work through SATS I would register through them for a University of Zululand degree. Even using that option the degree is very affordable.

The SAQA was discussed in some detail on this forum before. I did not know that SATS was connected to the SA Newport Campus.

It appears to be a viable option. I have to admit to finding the name "University of Zululand" not necessarily near the top of my list for University names. Having said that I also recognize that the Zulu Nation are a great people and in no way mean disrespect to them.
