In regards to portfolios, who has the most lenient requirements in terms of supportive explanation? I have documented learning in the form of professional certification via industry training and can certainly get letters from employers, job descriptions and the like, but I am torn between the time spent writing a 13 page explanation versus just sitting an exam. TESC seems like a good choice as my employer will be paying the tuition (!) but the process seems a burden. thanks again for everyone's help, John

Keeping in mind that I'm a TESC grad, I would certainly lean in their favor.

Before I chose a B.A. program, I looked at three significant programs that were heavy on the recognition of portfolio-based credit: Regents (now Excelsior), which does not always do their own evaluations; Oklahoma City University; and TESC.

I ultimately went with TESC because they were geopgraphically close to me (meaning that I could touch base with my advisors in person). And, ultimately, I did 98 credits via portfolio, and found their documentation standards clean and fairly easy.

    Portfolio Credits for MS

I am doing a Portfolio project at Pacific Western University for a MS Degree, you can earn up to 5 (ACE) credits this way, out of the 40 credits needed to graduate. However, this is not an overnight process, it takes quite a bit of efffort to compile and fully verify each learning. PW is state approved. For an RA choice, Jones University will allow up to 9 credits to be earned via portfolio, for their MBA.

About one or two years ago I would have opted for the 13 page paper. I have always had test anxiety to the umpteenth degree.

However, with all the tests I've subjected myself to over the past 6 months, I have to say that the anxiety is lessening.

Right now, depending on the subject, I would opt for a 2 hour test versus writing a 13 page paper. I think it would be easier. Even if I didn't know the subject, and if I had time to prepare, I would still take the test.

If you think a 13 page paper is too much, then by all means sit for the tests. However, if these are in subjects that you feel you really need to prepare before taking the exam, you may find there are less trade-offs.

    Good luck!

Do you have a thing for dubious schools Robert? I mean come on. With all of the reputable D/L names out there, good gawd man, what are you thinking? Is this some type of self abasement deal or what? I'm being dead serious. What possible motivation can there be to choose PWU over the dozens of reputable alternatives? Especially if your employer is paying for it!

Thanks for the replies. I, too had test-anxiety but have found after taking 8 CLEP's that that has all but gone away. Granted, I will have to study for some of the remaining tests (math, psychology) but I have save a great deal of time and effort by just taking the test. Lastly, I will always defer to RA schools so as to avoid any complications later. thanks again, John

    CA APPROVAL

    Randy:

I am not sure what you mean?

    CA State Approval:

PACIFIC WESTERN UNIVERSITY IS APPROVED BY THE BUREAU FOR POSTSECONDARY AND VAOCATIONAL EDUCATION TO GRANT DEGREES UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE CALIFORNIA EDUCATION CODE SECTION 94310. APPROVAL UNDER THIS SECTION INDICATES THAT THE ISTITUTE HAS BEEN VISITED AND REVIEWED ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC STANDARDS AND THAT THE CURRICULUM IS CONSISTENT IN QUALITY OFFERD BY APPROPRITE ESTABLISHED DEGREE GRANTING INSITUTIONS.

I believe what he means is that if you really are the director of human resources recruiting for two business of Unisys then you should realize that unaccredited degrees do not have near the utility of accredited degrees.

    Re: CA APPROVAL

I mean that PWU is at least, if not more controversial than KW, and that there are numerous alternatives. If for personal or religious reasons an RA school is verboten to you, then why not go with a non-RA school of some good standing? CCU comes to my mind. You and I both know that State Licensure is the bottom-rung of academic veracity. Hawaii, Montana, Wyoming all use similar verbiage. You asked for opinions some time back, guys like John Bear look the time to point you in a better direction. Why not take the advice? Get on Goggle, put in PWU and degree mill and see what comes back at you! RJT, the greatest thing about banging your head against a wall, is the blessed relief that comes when you finally stop.

    Question

    Randy:

Do you have a current PW catalog? Have you spoken with a PW advisor? ... If not, please do not judge and base all your opinion on google searches. The facts are PW CA is state approved to issue degrees, and is regaulated by the CA Board. PW HI, is leagally incorporated. They do not falsely claim accreditation.

I am fairly liberal and a radical at heart I suppose, and even I discounted them as a viable option in 1992 - I just found my porfolio work last week when cleaning out a filing cabinet :) . And, yes - I did speak with them several times over a 6 month period in the preparation of the portfolio - would you like a lend of it? :p

    G'day Mate!

Do you know if the Kennedy-Western University degree is illegal for use in Australia, or does the Government just view it as a mill? I saw an article from the "Australian" recently claiming K-W was a degree mill. Do you know if claiming scholastic standing based on a K-W degree constitutes an act of academic fraud down-under?

    Cheers…Randy

    Re: Question

This just sounds funny to me. It's like saying about someone after they have purposely plowed their car through a bunch of pedestrians on the sidewalk. "He's a responsible driver because he wasn't driving under the influence of alcohol."

    G'day mate - owyagoinorite?

It is a little different out here and some people are gunna read this wrong and crack the shits as we say ;)

    1. Local degrees are OK although some are looked at with a hidden smile in various places.

    2. Pommie degrees are OK because half of us were Pommies.

    3. Doctorates don't get you jobs out here - it depends who you know, who you know is being bonked by who, and who has published your bullshit.

    4. The guts of it is in my areas if they'll let you practice or grant you graded membership [learned societies] in Accountancy, Education, Engineering, Law the degree is OK, but we'll only really look at your professional memeberships.

    5. No one seriously reads newspapers out here even IF Rupert Murdoch owns half of them, because he dumped his Oz citizenship for a Yanky one to comply with your laws. I would dare say 0.0000000001% of the population who reads that paprt of that paper 0.0000000001% of our population of 515 people [ that was while ago] would be the only ones who gave a flying whatsit about what was written.

    6. Some academics have US PhD's but really they don't need them. Any others of us who get them unless they are from Harvard or Princeton [we don't know of any others] would be straight out asked how much we paid for them :)

    7. Someone from a large university late last week spoke to me about work I did from my EdD at Summit [drum roll to commence world war 3] , and after answering her questions [she was THE Professor at her place in her areas] I told her that I did my work under Mel Suhd at Summit - she said that where I did it had the consequence of a sparrows fart in a thunderstorm, it was what I did that had the credibility.

    8. Anyone who used a KW degree for a job would be a screwball and anyone who accepted that degree would desrve to get screwed. Same for any US degree really ... NOOSR would tell you to p*** off, but they also do that with lots of degrees. Once it is not Oz or Pom, you'd better have some answers ready and ati flak gear ready...

So does that answer your question?

    a. Acceptance is of the person and what they have done.

    b. No one really gives a rat arse of where it was done.

    c. The general view of the reading public [18%] in Australia is that papers publish the crap that sells papers.

You should come down here some time - we really don't give a **** about all that much - just get the barbie going and chuck us a stubbie mate :)
