PhD Question Hello, I posted this in another area here but I think it fits better here. I have been looking at PhD BA/DBA programs. I am active duty military and have 5 years until retirement. So I would like to continue on in school and set myself up for success for when I do retire. My question is about residency, how important is it if I decide to teach? Two school I have looked at so far are Capella and TUI. Capella has a residency requirement and TUI does not. Any info/help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
If your plan is to seek a full-time teaching position at a university, then your best bet would be a brick & mortar university that is accredited by AACSB. If your goal is to teach as an adjunct (part-time) faculty at a community college or university, then it is best to seek a business degree that allows for an in-demand concentration (e.g. accounting, marketing, I.T. management), rather than a general business management or organizational leadership degree.
I totally agree with Dr Pina, I think this summarizes the situation very well and it has been my experience as well. I would like to add that is some fields like IT Management and Accounting, certifications are also becoming critical.
Thank you Thank you for the replies. I was also looking into supply chain management. I have a logistics background in th AF so I thought it might fit well. I am sort of pigeon holed with that I have a strict aviation background so I want to sort of stretch out into another discipline. Once again thanks!
While working on a PhD you can do a few things to increase your odds of teaching. For my PhD in Business Admin (Management) I had some room for electives so I took a Healthcare Finance class and a Public Health class (giving me 15 credits in Healthcare). For the MBA in Marketing I was able to substitute the IT class (because I had a MS-ITM) for an additional marketing class giving me 20 marketing graduate credits. If you have a background in aviation, did you take other classes for the MAS that you can add to? Maybe a finance class? Do you have other experiences in the military you can capitalize on such as IT or something else?
Randell, I have spent hours on this site looking through threads to help decide what to do. At this point I think I may seek another Masters Degree. I guess I will start looking and diversifying myself to help with teaching in the future. My military background is in avionics/electronics repair and management. I appreciate the help and information! Chris
