My graduate assistantship, if i recall correctly, was $870 a month in 2003. It rose slightly, and then fall to half-appointment closer to graduation, then no support for the last semester (but I picked up a full-time contract gig to more than compensate). I guess no one told us this isn't enough for living expenses, so two of us lived on the amount (but yes, just barely) for a few years.
I guess I should thank people for thinking it's not enough, on behalf of all fellow international students and applicants. Of course, I couldn't swing it today myself.

If you look at findaphd.com and research individual schools, you will see that they often offer quite a bit of aid and "studentships" to overseas grad students. The field of endeavor you are considering might do well, but a clearly defined research question is needed so that you can find faculty to supervise your work. University of Birmingham has quite a few distance learning research fields available, at a good cost. I am considering applying to their English Department.
