    Hi Terry,

While I agree that typos and misspellings in online forums and other informal, online venues should not be critiqued, I disagree that these rules should be ignored completely and never commented upon. I am certainly not the best speller in the world, and I am certainly no wordsmith (in fact, I'm sure right now that you will find a number of spelling and/or grammatical errors in this message). However, when a communication is released from the president of a university, I expect a certain level of professionalism. And I'm sorry, but typos, misspelled words and grammatical errors do not convey the mark of a professional communication. Surely as a former journalist, you can recognize this as fact.

    Hi Tom,

I'll concede the point. It's just that I have noticed a lot of "piling on" when it comes to this sort of thing on this forum. It's one thing to disagree with someone; quite another to sink to the level of "grammar police" when someone can't think of a valid counterpoint.

Agreed. Whenever you get a group of "educated" people in the same place, location, forum, etc. this type of activity is bound to occur. In my case, I agree with this gentleman's thesis regarding distance education (although not taken to the extreme; i.e. I think that there will always be a need for physical campuses). However, he should have had someone proof read this press release prior to publication.
