Just to be clear, I wasn't knocking your advice. I honestly think it's a good idea. If I had a brilliant idea I'd do it.

    An analogy

Attending law school online with the intention of making big bucks is like trying to hit on a girl in a bar by telling her you live in your father's basement.

It works in a very limited number of circumstances. For instance, if your father is Donald Trump or Bill Gates.

I am in contact with a lawyer who has taken online law school and passed the bar and has own practice!

If that is your passion, you need to follow it but do it with your eyes wide open to the possible roadblock. Best of luck and let us know what final program you pick.

    It can and does happen.

But you might want to ask him/her about the overall success rate among his/her online law school classmates.

Another DL law degree option, and in my view, a far more prestigious degree than a JD via a U.S. online /correspondence law school …

    University of London-International Programmes: LLB
LLB and Diploma in Law - University of London LLB - University of London International Programmes - Key points

The International Center for Legal Studies, LLC offers online tutorial support for the UOL LLB:

    Teaching Institutions - Local Support

LAW DEGREE ONLINE LAW TUTORING FOR UNIVERSITY OF LONDON LL.B.

Note: The University of London LLB would likely be a qualifying degree (e.g., possess a qualifying first law degree from an accredited law school) for admission to an ABA LLM program. I believe several US State Boards of Law Examiners (in addition to California) permit ABA LLM degree holders to sit for their bar exams.

The only problem with this is that there is a difference between British and American Law. Even though we were originally based on English Common Law a lot has changed since we made our big split from the British.

And that is why Major mentioned the LLM degree in his original post. You would need the LLM to practice in the states.

I think what Sideman was getting at is that even with the LL.M, the majority of the work in a traditional American LL.M does not prepare you for U.S. States Bar Exams. It's a specialty for those who do practice law or intend to strengthen their pedigree for SJD programs.

So if you get the LL.B from UoL (and it's a great program) you'd still need the LL.M from an ABA school to potentially sit the bar and still be no better prepared for it than if you went to online law school :)

Personally, I think the concept of an accreditation agency holding the keys to an entire professional field while also being responsible for accrediting the schools is a major problem if the accreditation unfairly inflates tuition. On one hand you've got law schools with $4000 USD yearly tuition and on the other it's 50k or more. The span tells me there's a huge problem that needs mitigation and it likely starts with the ABA. Fair value is probably somewhere close to 20k. (which ironically is slightly more than Mass Law at Andover charges as a brick and mortar non-ABA school)

Ask any recent graduate from an ABA accredited law school and they'll tell you that neither does a JD.

And there are LLM programs specifically in "U.S. Law" that are resigned to teach foreign lawyers the differences they need to know. The one from Florida Coastal School of Law can be done by distance and is pretty inexpensive.

My reason for posting as regards the UOL LLB program; it would be a respected law degree from a notable university /law school via DL— at a fraction of the cost of a US ABA JD, even with later adding on an ABA LLM. For instance, the ABA Florida Coastal School of Law online LLM is less than $15K as Steve Foerster has pointed out.

When I lived in Jacksonville I seriously consider attending for my JD. The school was across the street from the gym I went to after work and I always seen the cars pulling in for evening classes. The reputation of the school was not the best and it was consider the school to go to if you could not get into UF's law school.
