NYT: Arthur Brooks on His "Valuable, Cheap" TESC Degree

Awesome read....I think i can put together a plan utilizing CBE/MOOCS/saylor/courses for under $7000

I like the part about how it changed his life...and I love the part about becoming a tenure professor at Saracuse. Very cool.

 

As Darryl Tippens, the provost of Pepperdine University, recently put it, “No PowerPoint presentation or elegant online lecture can make up for the surprise, the frisson, the spontaneous give-and-take of a spirited, open-ended dialogue with another person.”

I'm surprised the provost of Pepperdine would say this considering Pepperdine has an online MBA program.

 

To the unenlightened provost, I say, no amount of "frisson, the spontaneous give-and-take of a spirited, open-ended dialogue with another person" matters if both the student's learning style and personal circumstances are not a good fit with the traditional classroom learning so overly espoused by educational dinosaurs. In the end, it's whatever method that works best with the student so that s/he could genunely learn -- and that could be online -- and it's however that student applies his/her learning to benefit himself/herself and the world around him/her that really count.
