Here is a rather specific question about Northeastern University. It's one of 3 schools I'm applying to for a M.Ed. program, and I know there are some NEU students on this board.

My question is: Do graduates of NEU's College of Professional Studies become members of the general Northeastern Alumni Association?

The Alumni website says all graduates from Northeastern become members automatically, and the CPS student handbook mentions it as well.

The reason I'm unsure is that someone on the Internet (yes, yes) said that CPS don't have access to all Northeastern offerings. That alone wouldn't concern me, but the CPS also has its own alumni organization, and I'm wondering if this is instead of the regular one. Services are good and pretty much the same as for the regular Alumni Association, but I'm not sure I would want to be treated differently because I'm a working professional student.

You will indeed be an alumni of Northeastern University. A buddy of mine graduated from one of their CPS programs, and he is indeed a Northeastern Alum. When in doubt, always contact the school.

Don't worry, a lot of programs within their respected universities have alumni associations as well. Lets say if you were to obtain an MBA from Harvard Business School (HBS). You will be part of the HBS alumni professional association as well as regular Harvard's Alumni association.

    On Alumni associations.

Membership in Alum associations usually stack in favor of the candidate and not to his or her detriment. Example present in the preceding post.. the HBS grad is a HBS alum and HU alum for purposes of benefits gained. The HLS grad won't have access to HBS alum resources though.

So the question then for the OP is: What are the alumni benefits? Contact Northeastern's alumni affairs office to clarify.

First of all, thanks for your replies.

The example makes perfect sense. As I said, I just want to make sure that the CPS Alumni Association is indeed in addition to the general AA and not instead. The schools claims that CPS grads are NU grads in all respects, so I want to make sure that the degree comes with everything I expect.

I am probably being paranoid here. I have seen the diplomas, and I know that the CPS is simply one of Northeastern's eight or so colleges. I just got a little careful because they have been trying to get me into programs very...enthusiastically since I first inquired. ;) This is my first experience with a private school though. My wife, who went to BU, says that private schools tend to recruit pretty aggressively in general.
