I am a destop publisher (15 years experience) and want to get my graphic arts degree so I can legitimately call myself a "graphic desiger". Does anyone know of an accredited online school where I can get my graphic arts degree?

I did a bit or searching since reading your post and I have two main questions for you at this point (having come up with nothing so far). The first is, are you looking for an art degree or ar you looking for a computer-oriented degree (I know they're not mutually exclusive but my question is one of emphasis - do you see yourself with a pen in your hand or with a mouse in your hand? Secondly, what level of degree are you seeking? Bachelors? Masters?

Would you be interested in an accredited certificate program?

    Some sources

The Academy of Art University offers a number of design related degrees online. I don't know anything about the online programs, but know a couple of folks who have taught at the campus in San Francisco. They say the students tend to be immature, spoiled, and wanting to be entertained more than educated. So what's new?

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design

Depending on where you are you might be able to find a part-time certicate program, which would be of greater value for "real world" application. New York University has some great summer courses.

A credible source of commercial intensive training is: http://www.dynamicgraphics.com/DGT/DGT.aspx

As a starting point you may want to check the AIGA web site. There is some good info there on education and career choices.

    How do I see mysellf?

I see myself with a mouse in my hand -- definitely computer generated graphic design. Any ideas on how I can get my graphic arts degree through distance ed?

I am sure that you have considered this already, but in order to be a good graphic artists, you must have an artists aptitude. I have worked with a number of GA's that are good with the computer, but don't have the artists conception skills - and frankly - they suck at the GA part.

My point is be a artist first. You can always learn the computer stuff in school.

I had a friend go to the B&M Academy of Art College in SF. He said is was a great school although he was not that impressed with the online version. (sort of like going to an online engineering school - usually doesn't work that well unless you are really good to begin with)
