I realize this might be a little off topic - but perhaps not since I teach college online and plan to do all my future study via DL and am in the process of deciding on programs and schools [IMG]

My question - would it better for me to get a second masters degree, one or more grad certificates, or go ahead and pursue a doctorate?

My MS is in education (via DL of course!) and I teach college level courses totally online now. I have not stepped foot in a college classroom in over year nor would I ever want to again [IMG] I am quite happy teaching and designing online courses.

In order to teach educ at the college level, I need a doctorate and frankly, educ PhDs and EdDs are a dime a dozen. However, I really enjoy teaching at the 2-yr college level and have experience and knowledge (though not enough formal classes to satisfy teaching requirements) in other areas and would like to be able to teach other academic subjects online. I would also like to have the option of teaching 4-yr college gen ed courses online as well.

Any advice or suggestions? I had considered graduate certificates in one or more various areas -- soc, psych, anthropology etc -- but if I take enough of those classes to satisfy college teaching requirements (usually 18 grad hours though some of these could be combined) then all of a sudden I've spent another 2 years of time and money and could have been over halfway to a doctorate.

I'm sort of at a crossroads right now and need to decide which way to go so that I can get started on some classes this fall semester. My academic interests are in the areas of social deviance and violence prevention. I really do not want to go the PhD route (time and $$$) but I will seriously consider that if those three little letters will increase my future employment opportunities.

Thanks much for all ideas, suggestions, and opinions [IMG]

    Hi there!!!

I recommend you to look at the Doctor of Education at the University of Southern Queensland or Master of distance education at Athabasca University,in any if I were you I would go for my doctorate, I also teach and found out that a second master is not of much help as the doctorate,

    Hi Sunnie!

As you already know from my previous postings, I'm just getting started on the same MS that you recently completed.

I hope you get more replies to your posting, because I'm going to be asking the same questions in the next several months, and maybe "reading over your shoulder" will save me the trouble! [IMG]

    Have a fun weekend!

    Sunnie,

I would suggest either pursuing the Ph.D. or Ed.D. in the field of your interest. Certainly two master's degrees will expand your options, but I personally think that in the long term the doctorate would be more advantageous to you.
