    Hello-

I have been considering the PHD for a while and am determined to earn a terminal degree. My Question is for a Phd in Business administration- which school would be the better choice? I am looking for honest opinions on each program, and if there is a reader that has a better alternative, please let me know. I am looking for a PHD in Business(I am into leadership, accounting, and finance) that is regionally accredited, low cost (I think Walden or Capella get pretty expensive), and requires little to no residency. Anyway, please weigh in with the pros and cons of each program. Thanks in advance.

I know TUI is good but I don't know much more about it than that.

I can tell you that I totally love NCU. The classes are very rigorous, tons of work and I have learned a great deal from them. Everything about the school and the curriculum are well designed. They are employing very good pedagogy using online tutoring, integrated study software, eBooks and other cool tech stuff. It's all well designed, hard and a lot of fun too.

Cons: The customer service is slow. It takes quite a while to get an answer from a mentor and from your academic adviser. I don't really care about that; I don't need, or even want, much hand holding. Advisers and mentors are very nice and quite helpful when they do finally get back to you. If you are the kind of person who will need a lot of questions answered before you can move on with an assignment, you will be frustrated with NCU.

Hope that helps. PM me if you want to know more.

I was looking at both schools when I started my process in 2004. I went with NCU because TUI did not offer concentrations - it was just a PhD in Bus Admin but that has changed. I also had an issue with the cost/continued enrollment because I did not want to pay anything out of pocket and only use tuition assistance from my employer.

I like TUI and I like NCU. At this point, all things being equal I would still pick NCU for the PhD. They have a leg up with ACBSB accreditation. I did complete my MS-ITM from TUI and I am taking classes for my MBA in Marketing from them while I wait on my dissertation committee to return my paper so I really do know both schools.

Good point - the customer service at NCU is not good. Actually I have a voodoo doll of my academic advisor ;) The customer service at TUI is better and more willing to help you. To be honest, you never deal with them much so it is not a deal breaker. As far as the responses from facility on assignments, I would say they are equal.

If you poke the voodoo doll, does the advisor call you sooner?

By the way, Randell1234 helped me in my decision about whether to go to NCU and I'm grateful.

I wish! Actually, she does call back but I just do not like her attitude or the answer - it is always, "You have to contact your chair for that"...so what the heck do you do!?

Yes, mine is also quite useless beyond signing me up for the classes I want. I get a new one this week, so we'll see how he is.

Pat4Phd, as you can see, NCU does not have great customer service. But the classes are quite good. Even though we gripe, we like it. My mentors so far have been pretty good, this last one was great and very helpful, but she was also slow to respond.

I am at NCU. The course work is very challenging. Be prepared to do a fair amount of work each week. I have had mix results with customer service and with mentors. The level of the program difficulty is a bit more subjective. Because of my limited intelligence, I found the courses as equally and somewhat more difficult than anything that I have done previously.

You are a modest person claiming "limited intelligence". Any person who can swallow graduate level accounting has got to be pretty brilliant. I have been in and out of many programs, went to a very difficult B&M institution for my undergrad, attended UCI for a short while, the Cal State Long Beach MBA program and several others and I can say with certainty that NCU is tougher than all of my other experiences. But it's tough in a good way.

FWIW - I know that Capella isn't on your list of schools, and yes I understand the tuition is high, but I was happy with the rigor, customer service, etc. I won't comment on NCU and TUI because I have no experience with them.

Best of luck with the decision.

I can comment on Capella, I went there too for a short time and only dropped because of the tremendous cost of getting their PhD. It is a great school. I would have continued with Capella but I'm paying for this out of pocket, so price counts. I heard that a few Capella grads actually managed to pull off a tenured professorship; that's quite a feat with a DL degree.

I'll agree with the above. Capella's on my short list once I get out of UMass this December. All depends on the corporate sponsorship. If I get it, Capella's the top choice should I go DL. Those tenure-track grads are a huge sell point even if they are exceptions.

I think you mean ACBSP, not ACBSB. By the way, how meaningful is ACBSP accreditation with AACSB accreditation out there to be achieved?

You are right - that is what I meant and probably not much.

Thanks to everyone who took time to respond. From what I can tell both programs look to be good. Are there any DL or very low residency phd programs that are AACSB accredited?

I know Nova has applied and Kennesaw State University can be an option for a DBA.
