NCU increases tuition, again.

But you could also find "less then stellar" opinions on just about any of the "for profit" schools. I guess my big sticking point is that people have opinions based on what they "heard from someone that heard something from a friend of a cousin that read a blog online" type of thing.

That means only around three people in the USA do have an idea what NCU is :pat:

(Sorry - I could not resist since I deal with these kinds of numbers daily).

  3. Haha. I guess I was a little heavy on the 9 key.

    Nerd. :p

We can prove this stat wrong right here, right now, if at least four people who have posted in this thread are Americans.

Well, you can tell when they changed the school's logo. From an actually academic logo to a profit business logo. How does the new logo look in your degree certificate?:baby:

Well you can twist around your resume, and make people believe Northcentral University as North Central University (Minnesota).

    Where did this come from?

I earned my Ph.D. from NCU in late August. I have not personally experienced this "bad customer service" that others refer to. I first enrolled at the end of 2005 so I've been with them for a while! I do think it was best when they were not participatiing with Title IV funding at all, but of course students were in a huge uproar when they decided that, and now they have gone back to it, which is certainly part of the reason for their recent changes (negative changes in my opinion, changes that reduce flexibility for students).

I've received worse customer service from Sears but it seems to be a hit or miss thing when you deal with people everywhere.

I absolutely believe the opinions on this forum do NOT reflect the real reputation of the school. Most people I know have never heard of it. But they have heard bad things about other online schools, especially UoP and Kaplan. I would rather they have never heard of it, than they have only heard bad things.

As for the new logo on my Diploma. I think it looks awesome and yes, better than their old logo.

I got a job at a B&M university before the Ink was dry on it, and now it hangs in my office at the University. I know when I was hired, it was most likely based more on my experience and other credentials, along with the fact that I actually had a regionally accredited Ph.D. (which was required for the position).

When I was looking for a school for my doctorate, I went to the sources (their websites, and I made phone calls and got information directly from the schools) rather than seeking opinions of people from a forum such as this. I liked that NCU was not pushy and just tried to give me the facts of what they were really like so I could make the decision best for me. At the time I could have had a 1/3 off tuition discount with Walden but it was still less expensive for me to go with NCU. I also liked the degree choices better for my purposes, and I feel residencies are a not needed. I am truly a fan of distance learning and think it can be done effectively with no residencies. Sure, I could have tried to find a local B&M school for my doctorate but nothing was local enough for me and I was not going to quit my job or move at my age, so that is why NCU was the best choice for me.

As far as paying all that money, I agree with those who said anybody who is financially struggling should not pursue any of these mentioned schools. I saved my money ahead before making the decision to enroll. At the time, NCU offered a 10% discount if you paid for the program in full, and this locked in your tuition rate in case you had to take additional courses. I did not finish before this "new stuff" came down the pike, but I did not have take 6 Dissertation courses as someone here claimed you would have to have (at least). I did have to take one extra one (four all together). I do know some students STILL are making it through with three dissertation courses. At least my tuition for that extra course was the same as my original tuition, which I have to say was about half what NCU's new 2011 rate will be. I am glad I finished when I did but I would likely still choose the same school again if I felt I could afford it, and it was inline with the tuition rates of other options, and still had no residency requirement, still offered the degree I was seeking, and still had the independent learning model (Cohorts are fine as an online instructor, but for myself as a student, I don't like them, and group assignments are just not cool at all!)

    Sue,
I do agree - when I called NCU they painted one ugly picture and gave me the facts - it is difficult and many people don't make it. There was never a follow up call from them after that (which I respect). There are other school I looked into at about the same time and I still get calls from them asking if I am interested in the program...6 years later!

Can you tell us a little about the sort of institution, and whether you had a relationship with it before you graduated? I'm not trying to be obnoxious, it's just that lots of people guess about this sort of thing in different directions, and you have actual experience, which is still pretty rare.

    Steve,
I will send you a PM because I don't like to post information about the places I work on forums. But it is a State University with over 8000 students.

One thing I've never understood about NCU is why their MBA tuition is so high at $1850 per 3 unit course... !

TUI University seems like a much better deal for online RA MBA at $1,380 for a 4 unit course

And if you need an accredited MBA, the Aspen MBA at $3600 total prepay tuition is an outstanding value.

On that note, graduate tuition at Andrew Jackson University is $95/credit, making them $150 less than AU, with no prepay required.

You basically just described Excelsior College. Maybe one day they, too, will offer doctorates?
