I enjoyed my classes at Ed Direct. The best part was being able to breeze through the really easy ones and not have them drug out over 16 weeks. :)

    Education Direct

I complete 2 almost 3 semesters with Education Direct in there ASB in computer science degree program I have total of 32 semester hours with ED. I don't for see myself finishing the program as I could not finish the Visual Basic course. I didn't seek any help so its totaly my fault.

However my main goal is to get a Degree. For personel satifaction not career advancement.

This past week I've complete an application with Excelsior College. I'm having my transcripts from ED sentto Excelsior. I'm hoping the majority of my credits are accepted. I also took 2 Cleveland Institute of Electronics programs and I hoping I get some transfer credit. The school is listed with "ACE" an accredit through DETC.

I let you all know what Excelsior gives me so you can use that a steping stone

    Education Direct - Visual Basic

Visual Basic is the ONLY course I have taken from Education Direct. I took the Career Diploma Program for Visual Basic. I found it challenging but I enjoyed it. I now teach Visual Basic.NET for Empire State College, along with several math courses. Mgkrill, was your VB course a 3 credit class or something more? I am curious how the VB Career Diploma program compares to VB courses that are part of Ed. Direct's Associate degree programs.

    VB

It was a 3 semester hour course. I was giving the vb.net stutdent software along with the ED guided course manuals and a texts book. I also had to download studnet files off the web.

The problem I had was going into the 3rd modual when I had to write a little program. At the time I was selling and buying a new home and put it on back burner and never picked it back up.

I really have no desire to learn programing I just really wanted that piece of paper. So instead of starting over I'M looking for a college that will take all credits and develope a plan for me to reach that goal.

    32 semester hours from ED
    6 semester hours from UMUC
25 ACE credit recomendtions from Army/American Council on Education Transcript (AARTS)

    Diploma from CIE: Electronics Communications
Diploma from CIE: Electronics Technology w/Digital & microprocessor Labs

I am currently taking Technical Mathematics through education direct. I have already taken this course several years back at a technical college, but wanted to reinforce what I learned since I started this program. I would say the course is harder than the one I had before. It is a two course sequence consisting of intermediate algebra in the first course and Geometry and trig in the second course. Someone who has had pre-algebra could probably jump into this lesson with no problem. If you do take this course and have any trouble the instructors may be helpful. I needed help with a math problem during the Engineering Technology Orientation class I took a couple months back and found that the instructor was very helpful. He was patient with me and was very knowledgeable. I was very pleased and it definately boosted my confidence about the program. After I complete the math course I will take the engineering materials course and then english composition. My goal is to complete my first semester in six months. I put in about 15 hours a week and completed Manufacturing Processes course in eight weeks. I t was worth four credits. Overall, I would say the courses at education direct are harder than what I took at Middle Georgia Technical College.

I just took the first online exam for my "Introduction to Business" course. The first lesson is "Business in a Global Environment". It is based on the first 160 pages of the textbook (which looks more like a large phone book) and covers supply and demand curves, types of economic systems, international trading, types of unemployment and ethical dilemmas in business...and that's just the first four chapters of the book.

I scored a 90. I would have scored 100, but I made the stupid mistake of marking a different answer than the one I intended on one question, and not going with my first instinct on another question. So far, I'm carrying a 93 out of 100 average on my courses and exams.

Lesson two is up next: "Starting and Growing your Business"

So, like how much does it cost?

I am currently on a payment plan, which is $35 per month. The total cost of this semester is $748. Total cost of the associate degree is less than $3,000. While the payments are a minimum of $35 a month, I can of course pay more and pay off the program faster. ED does not award the degree until all of the payments are made.

Ok thanks for the info on costs.

I have just phone Education Direct to ask if they give courses to outside students.

Specifically I am interested in their Information Literacy course to see if with it I can fulfill the Excelsior College Requirement where I am enrolled.

CONFIRMED: NO, one cannot take single courses; one must enroll for a degree program with them.

I cannot tell you how many time I have heard the same thing and it is just not true!

    YES YOU CAN!

The customer service reps can be zombies at ED sometimes.

You have to be very persistant with these people to get results.

The truth is, the people answering the phone are trained to sell you on enrolling into their program. They probably don't know that it IS possible to buy sigle courses because nobody told them that you can.

you have to call the Business and Industrial division and ask for a Manager.

They will be able to help you.

I have taken individual courses from them and so have many others.

    Good luck.

    Don't give up.

Ummm...I think if you read earlier in this thread you will see posts from people who have taken individual classes. Just how do you think they did that?

Also, I came across this website during the course of my studies. It seems there are MANY individual courses and texts from which to choose.

Well, either I didn't express myself well when I called them, I.e; I think I told the operator something like:

"Can I do a single course of one of your degrees or is it not possible to take single courses included in your degrees?"

or they just didn't want to help me with this. I just don't feel in a position to be pushy with some foreign operator calling from Spain as I am although I speak fluent english, they can detect I am foreign because I do have some sort of European accent.

But anyways, I think I will call them again today and say something like:
"I would like some information on your Information Literacy Course..."

    Information Literacy at Excelsior

To the previous poster. Excelsior College will not accept the Information Literacy course from Education Direct as equivalent to that of there Information Literacy course. The reason why I state this is that I've been told that Excelsior will only, and I repeat only accept credit for an Information Literacy class from a regionally accredited school. Excelsior will not accept an Information Literacy course from a nationally accredited school. They do accept other credits from nationally accredited schools such as Education Direct, but they will not accept it for Information Literacy that is completed at a nationally accredited school for some reason. I just wanted to pass this along so that you aren't waisting your time. Good luck.

    Re: Information Literacy at Excelsior

They should check with Education Direct to see if its Information Literacy course is evaluated by ACE. If it is, there is no reason that Excelsior should not accept it, despite ED's national accreditation.

Of course, ED's Information Literacy course is only a one credit course. Perhaps Excelsior requires something worth more credits?

    Excelsior's rquirement is 1 credit.

Well I guess the best thing I can do is first call Excelsior and double check this, before inquirying further with ED.

Make sure you tell them you believe the course may be ACE-evaluated. That is what will make the difference for transfer to Excelsior. Please let us know how it turns out.

Just received the following news by email from EXCELSIOR regarding EDUCATION DIRECT (in reply to my inquiry as to whether Excelsior would accept ED's IL course to cover EXC's IL requirement (Note especially what they say about ED's possible RA, and their acceptance of their courses at EXC):

... I have checked the ACE guide and Education
Direct has not had a course in Information Literacy evaluated for credit. However, I did find it on the website [Presumably Excelsior is refering to ED's website]. This course would satisfy the
Information Literacy requirement. Education Direct is currently a
candidate for regional accreditation through the Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools and therefore we can accept credit from them directly even if the course has not been evaluated by ACE. I could not find a price for this course however, the site just lists tuition for the
    whole program.

I also found a one credit course at Herkimer County Community College, GE
111 Information Literacy that is $208. The link is as follows:
    www.hccc.ntcnet.com/internetacademy/programs/index.htm
    ...

PS: I've looked at the ED web site again and this IL course doesn't seem to be offered separately. It is mentioned in some of their degree syllabuses but that's all. Having established that EXC will accepot this course, all that's left is that maybe one of you American folk could call them and clarify this for once and for all:

    1) Can one take their course in IL separately? 2) What is the total cost? 3) What are the details (can it be done online with no proctor testing, and so on?).

    their phone: 1-800-275-4410
An example of where this course is mentioned in their site:
    http://www.educationdirect.com/busmgmt/ProgramOutline.html

    Please let us know.
