Hey guys, Im a newb to the forum but been browsing around, and Ive seen a few people recommend Boston University for distance ed. Granted its expensive. My questions is for anyone who either went there or knows someone who has, and did the Distance learning thing. How hard was it to get in? Im not worried about my GPA, but my GRE's scores suck. Also any other recommendations for schools for this degree plan would be great. Im also looking at Northwestern, but I like how terms are only 7 weeks x2 at Boston. Thanks
Don't worry about getting in so long as you're in the ballpark with your standardized exam scores. the MSCIS is through the Metropolitan College so you're not going to be lumped in with the conventional admissions crowd.
Boston University's Metropolitan College is their continuing education division, so they basically have open enrollment, which means they will accept just about everyone who applies. The BU name carries some weight, no doubt about it, but I would think about the cost. Their programs are fiercely expensive, and I'm not sure the cost is worth the return. You would be well-served to do some more research into some less-expensive programs, IMO.
I recently graduated from the BU CIS program. I agree with the other posts that admissions are probably not very competitive. The GRE is not required. I thought it was a good program, but agree with Bruce's comment on cost. The vast majority of it was covered by tuition reimbursement so this was not a major issue for me, but cost is certainly a big consideration (although the Northwestern program you are also looking at is probably also quite expensive). Feel free to ask me any specific questions you have about the program.
I will be graduating from there in Dec. While the admissions may not be very competitive and the program is expensive, it is worth the cost. BU's reputation in the IT (particularly the gov't IT) field is well known. Their format is excellent as well; when you take 2 classes a semester, you take one course, finish it, then move on to the next one. Much better for working professionals to focus on!
I just found out that BU does not accept international students for their online programme.... very uncool. Does anyone know why ?
Is it possible to take more than one class at a time, i.e. 2 (4) credit classes per 7 weeks? I am looking at this program but need something full time. Thank you!
1. If anyone is going to the program they will not be an international student if the position you express is true. So you will not get a reply from anyone living internationally in relation to the US that will be able to express an answer given from BU. 2. It's almost a certainty that no one in the program was affected and would not be asking the question you're asking, thus no valid responses from students. 3. School administrators would not post the reasons online for fear of the answer being taken the wrong way. So... The best answer I can offer you is "Contact the school and ask." Oddly, logic works.
Regarding international students, I distinctly remember a student who lived in Africa (if I remember correctly Nigeria), because I remember him posting about how he had problems getting a stable internet connection there. I believe that there were several from Canada and I just verified via linkedin that one person who was in the program with me was from Canada. I am pretty sure I recall several other international students as well, but can't specifically remember where they were from. Regarding multiple courses per 7 week term, I think you need (or are at least supposed to) get permission for this, but I remember at least a couple of cases that someone commented that they were doing it. At least in some of those cases, they disappeared after week one, so I think they dropped on due to the workload. I remember one woman finishing though. I think if you were working full time this would be very difficult (unless you knew the material well already) due to the workload, but if you are not, it would probably be fine to take two. It really isn't designed as a full time program though and there might be some point at which the tuition structure changes if you go over a certain number of credits. I did not do that, so I am not sure, but I think I may have read that somewhere. BU could certainly answer the question though.
Dear Friends, I have gained admission to Boston University's metropolitan College For 'Master of Science in Administrative Studies concentration in Financial Economics' program for Fall 2012. I am 22 yrs old and have completed my Bachelor's in Computer Engineering ,Mumbai I have a few questions :- 1. What are the credentials of METROPOLITAN COLLEGE in general ? 2. Since BU is a very Expensive school(84 grand tution fees for 2 yrs) ,what are the job prospects after completing my MS in BOSTON or the USA in general after this particular degree? Would be Grateful for your suggestions and Opinions guys !

Hi Varumn! I am applying to Boston University Metropolitan College as well. For Master of Science in Administrative Studies in Economic Development and Tourism Management. How long does it take for you to receive the admission decision? I just applied two days ago. Thank you and congratulations!
84 grand?? Wow that's a lot. I got an email from a BU enrollment advisor and he said it was just under 40 grand for an MS in International Marketing Management, also a 2 year program. Even that sounds very expensive to me. IMHO, I don't think in this job market, that degree will guarantee you a job. There are a lot of people with advanced degrees who are jobless and underemployed right now.
thanks alot Taylor ,so i guess ill work in india itself for a couple of years (Ive landed a job as a management trainee at credit suisse bank) and then may b apply for an mba. I hope the uS offers a better market fr jobs 5 yrs down the line !
Your welcome. But please take my advice with a grain of salt since I really don't know much about you which I'm sure you did. I only hoped more people could've chimed in and gave you a better picture of the job prospects out here with a graduate degree. Good luck!

Hi All, I am currently considering applying to the CIS program. I just wanted to see if anyone could give some insight on how difficult the program is, especially for someone who has not done any programming in the past. Thanks!
