    Hey Gang!

My wife is an LPN and she wants to get her BSN to become an RN... ( wage is the obivous reason)

We reside in Canada ( Nova Scotia to be more exact ) and I've not been able to find anything for her where she could do it online and do her clinicals at a local hospital...

Athabasca is one however having to go to Calgary several times would cost 1000's in flight/stay costs - therefore not an option.

Does anyone out there have any ideas, or should she give up on her RN thoughts.

    Thanks all!!

    Hi BlueMason,

Your wife should look up "Deaconess," or try http://www.deaconess.edu. This is a nursing school in Missouri that offers an online program for LPNs, to obtain an Associates in nursing(RN) degree. They also offer current RNs an online BS program in nursing. I hope this may help.

    Good luck!

    Hi,

UOP has an online LPN to BSN program, and I know we have a couple of campuses in Canada:

Here is a summary pulled of the website:

Licensed Practical Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing
    Version 001

    Program Description

The University of Phoenix, College of Health Sciences and Nursing is committed to the advancement of nurses. Program objectives focus on evidenced based professional practice, critical thinking, communication, information utilization and collaboration. The acquisition of these objectives is essential to the practice of nursing.

The LPN/LVN track provides an opportunity for Practical/Vocational nurses to transition into the BSN program. This track is designed to develop professional knowledge and skills to support the transition of LVN/LPN to the role of registered nurse (RN). Successful completion of the program allows students to sit for the NCLEX exam for registered nurses.

The curriculum, as with the RN to BSN, is built upon a foundation of biological, physical, and social sciences, which contribute to the science of nursing. The liberal arts components enhance the development of the intellectual, social, and cultural aspects of the professional nurse.

The program supports the foundation of the biological, physical and social sciences through an instructional program with behavioral objectives that concentrate on the development of the nurse's role. The LPN/LVN to BSN program is comprised of two components. Students enter a nursing Introductory Course Sequence (ICS) which focuses on role transition; knowledge and skills related to care of medical/surgical, pediatric geriatric, maternal child, and mental health clients, as well as additional health and general educational related support courses.

Upon completion of these courses, the student will transition into the 36 credit upper division nursing component, which will focus on expanding their nursing experience to include families, communities, research, and leadership. They will continue to develop their role transition from LPN/LVN to BSN focusing on the nurse's role as caregiver, teacher, and manger of care.

    courses:

    Physical Assessment HCS 210
Human Anatomy and Physiology HCS 250
    Environmental Microbiology HCS 255
    Pharmacology HCS 260
Transition to Professional Nursing NUR 205
Nursing Management of the Medical-Surgical Client I NUR 214
Nursing Management of the Medical-Surgical Client II NUR 215
    Maternal Child Nursing NUR 220
Nursing Management of the Pediatric Client NUR 225
    Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing NUR 230
Nursing Management of the Geriatric Client NUR 235

I am sure it isn't cheap, but it's NLNAC and PPSEC accredited.

I do believe that Excelsior also offers a nursing program, but I am not sure about the clinicals.

Don't forget Excelsior (sp) she could get her AS in nursing or BSN with a few written exams and clinical evaluations. The masters in nursing is more of a classroom schedual.

    Thanks for the info gang...

UoP: no dice... if you're an RN and want your BSN, you're find, if you're an LPN and WANT to get your RN/BSN - no dice :(

Excelsior - same.. you need to be an RN to getinto the BSN unless you're lucky and live in a province where you can sit for your RN's after getting an AS Degree... Ontario does not qualify - we live in NS and are waiting to hear back from the body responsible... but NS being NS, I highly doubt it.

She called Deaconess and no dice there as well.. Canada is WAY behind when it comes to DL - esp. in the health field :(

    Any other thoughts???

    Thanks!

I found a foreign caribbean medical school offering the RN online but who knows if any US or Canadian State Board of Nursing will accept it.

    Idea!

I noticed one has to have a BSN for licensure in your country. Perhaps she should get the Excelsior A.S. RN then continue for the B.S.

Heck, an A.S is on the way to a B.S. anyhow!
