My colleague (and his "mentors" in the office) routinely used a graphing calculator to help with the LSU homework assignments. You had to show all work, so you couldn't simply copy the answer from the calculator. But you could use the calc to double-check your final result.

In my experience, this is typical for college math courses. As with most math textbooks, the answers to many of the assigned problems were also printed in an appendix in the back, so you could double-check your final result that way too.

LSU did not allow the use of a calculator in the calculus exams, which again in my experience is typical for college math courses. I would surprised if UWyoming allowed graphing calculators in calculus exams. Even if they did, a calculator might be of limited value, because you would probably still have to show all your work on the exam (as on the homework).

    Another web based calculus course

    http://www.riosalado.edu/

They also offer Calculus 2. I sent an e-mail to confirm tuition rates, but it appears that under 7 credits = $96/hour.

There are a great many courses offered :); although Clovis Community College is still a less expensive option. I just sent the check for tuition for my daughter to take Trig in the Fall...

Thanks Ian. If you are a CA resident, Coastline CC is a great deal; but if you live out of state, tuition is $181/hr. I hope I am correct with my tuition estimate from Rio Salado - approximately the same price as LSU. My daughter and I will then have two delivery choices in January for the subject matter and we can discuss pros/cons of web based v. correspondence delivery.

    Straighterline

This could very be the best (and most affordable) method of obtaining RA calculus credit I've seen so far.

Straighterline seems to be fairly new on the DL scene but everything checks out so far. There courses are online, not bound by a rigid schedule plus you get 10 hours of tutoring per course. The classes are $399 each. Once you finish the course either Fort Hayes State University, Potomac College or Jones International University will award college credit.

I contacted them about their calculus offering. It's still in development right now but will be offered starting in November.

Distance learning courses are $174/hr - the $96/hr is for brick and mortar classes only for out of state residents who live in AZ enrolled in less than 7 credits.

My daughter has made her Calculus decision!

    Hello everyone,

After a great deal of thought and consideration - my daughter and I have decided to purchase a 1 year subscription for the online Thinkwell Calculus Course and then take the Calculus CLEP she completes the course.

My daughter is currently enrolled in Trigonometry at Clovis Community College. The course uses Thinkwell software. My daughter loves it - she LOOKS FORWARD to her online lecture with Mr. Berger (she thinks he's cool) and she is doing very well with the material.

Since Calculus 1 is not an option at Clovis, we were leaning towards enrolling in Calculus via correspondence through the University of Wyoming or LSU. However, once we discovered that Thinkwell has Calculus available - this was a no brainer.

The cost for a one year subscription for the Thinkwell Calculus Course is $239.

    http://www.thinkwell.com/homeschool/product/calculus

Factor in $90 for the CLEP - Calculus 1 for $329 includes textbook and National Exam. Not bad. :)

Once she completes the Thinkwell course - we'll look at LSU or the University of Wyoming again for Calculus 2.

    Shawn

PS - We also purchased Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus Thompson for $8 on Amazon as a reference book.

It is great that your daughter is doing well in math - this subject can lead to a career in itself or is a stepping stone to other science/technical careers.
The aerospace company I worked for hired math majors (all of them were female - several started out with the idea of becoming school teachers) at very good salaries who worked on cost models for large aerospace projects.
Let your daughter we wish her all the best in her studies.

You and your daughter might enjoy the book "Innumeracy" by John Allen Paulos.
