    Coincidentally, I was just talking to someone about the value of a PMP today. I think part of that value is from the experience requirement, partially because it serves as a barrier to entry and partially because the cert is a validation that the holder has professional experience.

    In general, I think the knowledge gained from a well rounded masters degree program will remain with you longer than most certifications (this would probably not apply to some like PMP) because they tend to be more about general concepts instead of a product, language, or technology.

    For example, I think a course in database systems that teaches concepts like ER modeling, normalization, and relational algebra will be useful for longer than studying for an Oracle DBA Certification that is version specific. Additionally, I think the general concepts learned getting the degree make it a lot easier to learn the specifics needed for the certifications.
