I've already earned a Master of Arts degree and have been taking courses in a second discipline (English). I chose each of my courses based on personal interest and will NOT receive a second M.A. degree -- because I don't want to write another thesis :)

However, I want to teach English Lit and will soon be close to 30 graduate units. How can I effectively word this second discipline on my C.V.?

    Thank you for any help!

I would list it as follows

    Degrees:
    Master of Arts

    Other Education:
30 graduate credits in English Lit

This is an excellent way to list the education.

For the interview you may wish to be prepared to explain (no need to volunteer this information unless asked) why you have so many credits but no degree. I suggest avoiding the statement "I didn't want to write a thesis" and trying something like "I took the classes out of personal interest." Based on your post both statements are true but one sounds a little more positive.

    vanadoo,
You would be right at home in South Carolina, as a teacher. They actually have a term which relates to the payscale, its called "Masters + 30"

You get X amount of dollars for a Bachelors degree
You get X amount of dollars for a Master's
Then you get another bump in the payscale for "Master's + 30"

Provided of course you pass all the praxis exams in your content area.

Heck if it comes up in an interview tell'em some states provide an incentive for teachers to have 30 hours past a Masters in thier subject content area and you just wanted to cover all your bases....something along those lines )

I spent some time searching the internet earlier and came across an online CV which stated something along the lines of:

"Post-Masters Work TopNotch University, 18 Graduate Hours in History"

I haven't heard the term "post-masters work" before. Has anyone else come across this terminology, and is it appropriate on the academic job market?

To me that's more a brief description than actual terminology. It sounds like the guy did six courses in a graduate program in History after having gotten a Master's in something else. He's probably putting it on there so he can apply for adjunct gigs. Seems fine to me.

    I've seen it often as

    Additional Graduate Study:
University for Perpetual Students, Anytown USA, American History
Kantgetenuf College, Anothertown USA, Political Science

Just a thought - could your school give you a post grad certificate (I have several credits to one at UC Riverside).
