I agree that the KC/AU route is too muddy. I've decided to stick to RA senior colleges to have all my bases covered. I'll have to relocate, but I'm unmarried and have no children. The boyfriend has a Purple Heart; he'll survive, LOL. Thanks for your help!

Steve, what would it say on the transcript?

The following schools denied my NA degree (DETC) earned in 1990 at The Culinary Inst. of America, though it is now an RA college:

    Johnson Wales University (1995ish)
    University of Iowa (1995ish)
    Western Illinois University (1998ish)
    St. Ambrose University (1998ish)
    University of Phoenix (1998ish)
Cornell University *CIA has an articulation with them but won't honor pre RA degrees (1998ish)
    Thomas Edison State College (2005)
    Excelsior College (2005)
    Charter Oak State College (2005)
    Black Hawk College (2005)
    Scott Communtiy College (2005)
    University of Adalaide (Australia) (2009)
    Harvard University Extension (2009)
    Ocean County College (2010)

I have sent transcripts to other schools, but since I wasn't hoping to use the credit in a degree, it didn't matter. These were just the ones that told me no.

You could have them send you one and see for sure, but I would expect your transcript to say when you took all your courses, perhaps listed by semester, and also include who has accredited the school and when that accreditation was finalized.

I think the reason they didn't accept your credits was because they considered your courses to vocational/trade in nature. Accreditation isn't the only factor in course transfers. The school you're trying to transfer TO has to offer courses that are equivalent to the courses you want to transfer in. If they don't offer equivalent courses, then they won't accept your credits in transfer, regardless of whether the school is RA or NA.

Going even further, when you say they denied your NA degree, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that some schools accepted some of your coursework (Ex: regular courses in English, History, etc), but rejected the rest of your courses - and so you feel like they rejected your whole degree? Or, did they just not accept ANY of your individual courses? Transfer evaluation is usually done on a course by course basis, not a degree basis.

Also, was the DETC recognized/approved by CHEA in 1990? If not, that could be a reason why. Anybody can start an accreditation agency and accredit schools, but only those accreditation agencies that are recognized by the Dept. of Education - via CHEA (or its predecessor) - are considered to have legitimate accreditation.

If DETC was recognized by CHEA in 1990, then most likely the schools you applied to simply considered your courses voc/trade in nature and since they didn't offer any equivalents, they wouldn't accept them.

A little more than a decade ago I was a faculty member at another college in Knoxville. It was impossible for students to get transcripts from Knoxville College. No amount of begging and pleading worked. The college simply ignored all requests. That meant the students could not get transfer credit and had to repeat classes. That was back when it was a RA school. Who knows what its student services might be like now.
