    Hi Kizmet,

No problem, I looked up their tuition here IACI offers UNISA degrees, Distance Learning University, School, College of Distance Education and you are right as to their affordability, but remember that this is all out of pocket. I can fund my undergraduate studies mostly with grant monies, (and scholarships) if I am careful, right here in the U.S. I am attempting to do something that is very hard, but not impossible. I have done some totally impossible crap in the past (like feeding a family of five well for 100 per months by cooking for a month, freezing, buying in bulk and wholesale) and a lot of college "expenses" are bullcrap, IMO.

The thing I fear the most about expenses in college is not the tuition and fees, because these are published to the public and they are locked into keeping their word. The thing that makes me shiver is the purchase of textbooks. I will do everything possible to avoid supporting the overpricing of textbooks, because it further supports the notion of not making education available to everyone, if they so choose.

I have another friend who's a visual artist and teacher who briefly studied art therapy. Alarmingly many of her fellow students had independent means and were doing this as a part-hobby, part-volunteering sideline. There were very few jobs in art therapy per se in the area relative to the number of graduates of this standalone art therapy school. (How many people have you known to ever have worked with an art therapist?) I'd advise someone who felt a calling to this sort of work to look at a full-fledged, wider-scope qualification in a relevant field like counseling, social work, special education, etc., and build an interest in art therapy – and maybe then add a formal qualification in art therapy – on top of that.

Jonathan, You have made a wonderful point, one that I have been blind to. I know one person who is an art therapist (and she is subsidized by her parents all the way, living expenses or a new Lexus are only a phone call away!) and I do not recall ever hearing of anyone I am acquainted with pursuing art therapy. Thanks!

Jonathan, I did catch this from the tone of the sentence. I wish I could say that I never got a student loan (do not tongue-lash me, I know it was stupid!) but I did. Thankfully it was only to the tune of 1750.00. Never again.

This doesn't have anything to do with your situation, but regardless of what you were told while in St. Vincent I find it a little difficult to believe that the average young person there really has a college degree, even including SVGCC. Some, sure, of course, but more than half?

    SteveFoerster,

Good point, you aroused my curiosity. I know what I was told, but now know what I just read about the average Vincentian, which is what you pointed out, that post secondary education is not as vast as she said. I can only come to the conclusion that she is part of the small middle class there, and her statement holds true for her and the people she associates with. So that mght explain the discrepancy.

Overall, yeah you are right. they have a 96% literacy rate, and that is too be praised, but I failed to see any statistics that backed up her claims. Thanks!

Hey ArtAttack, when you want to reply to someone, find the post that you want to reply to, and then click "Reply With Quote" Just like I did to you. That makes it look like this one and it's much easier to follow than using their name.
