Last Saturday, Afghanistan’s Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar banned the Internet and ordered the Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (the militia’s hard-line religious police) to punish users according to Islamic law. If the punishment for stealing is the cutting off the perpetrator’s hand, and the punishment for adultery is castration, what is the punishment for surfing the Internet, a pre-frontal lobotomy? If so, methinks there is a great deal of recidivism. Oh well, there goes my investment in Afghanistan Online. Gus Sainz
Where does this leave all the Afghan citizens working on degrees through Trinity College/University? I guess they will have to complete their studies via snail mail. Russell
Dear Gus, Oh, my! This is really bad news. Dr. Bernard Freeman (sp?), who posts here from to time, was in the process of opening an oline Afghani university, recognized in Japan, I think. I hope he hasn't lost too much money. Regards, Karlos Alberto
