With the H1B visa currently dominating the news I think we all need to know if degrees in India are directly equivalent to USA degrees. Bachelors. USA has 5 year 120 semester hours degrees. India has 3 year degrees? Not equivalent? Same age student enters uni in both countries and someone in India graduates two years before USA student and gets an H1B visa to work in the USA. Who is eligible to be hired first in the USA. Has nothing to do with culture at that point?
US bachelor degrees are four years, not five, and that's only because students are inexplicably not expected to study in the summer, as if this is 1920 and they have to go home to help out on the farm or something. As for equivalencies, I'm not sure how good a job foreign credential evaluators do with degrees from India. Probably depends on the evaluator?
It depends a lot on the evaluator. WES is the most strict and many times you need an Indian Masters to be evaluated as an American Bachelors but other NACES members are more lenient.
Great, but there's no reason for the academic calendar to revolve around those who do. Students should just take a semester off to work whenever they want to or need to, and maybe take a few courses online while they're at it.
Somebody has to reap all that grain and hops to keep the keggers going during the Fall and Spring semesters....
