Alright Steve I read your blog. You claim all you want to do is move out of the US and on top of that your wife is a foreigner, goes to school here right? Do you think you might have a slanted point of view?

A lot of motels we stay at owned by immigrants from India. In chatting with them over the years we found that what they do initially is that several families put their collective money into a run down motel, do improvements, using family members to do most of the maintenence and service work. When the motel is profitable they buy a second motel, and so on. In one of the motels I stay at, they have their daughters John Hopkins MD diploma displayed in the lobby because they want to show how proud they are of her.

That’s good! So what you're saying they hire their family members, other immigrants? How does that help the US.....

What's freaking me out is that I'm be chastised for wanting to protect American's jobs!

In the case I mentioned it does create jobs outside of the family - renovating motels requires lots of supplies ranging from toilet bowls to windows to paint to concrete to lots of other items. Local government employees provide permits, conduct inspections, and reassess the property value. Then of course guests like me who visit, go out and spend money at local businesses.

Good point, I have to give you that.

I'm not chastising you and I believe the US should be doing more to provide more jobs in the US.

Ironically I work in an area that is protected by ITAR - however that regulation has turned into a two way sword - for example it is extremely difficult, and sometimes impossible, to export communications satellites; so now Europe is the industry leader in a high tech business worth more than $2 billion per year.

That's the thing about politics, it's always a two way street no matter how simple the issue may seem on the surface, but especially economics of any sort.

I absolutely do not agree with the statement that an American should always get a job over a competing immigrant. I think that carries a lot of negative baggage beyond the obvious as well as discourages our population growth. People need to understand, immigrants don't just take jobs, they make jobs, they demand services and products and integrate into our economy just like anybody else. I may not employ anybody, but I make jobs at the real estate company I used to get my condo, at the super market, I keep that home-grown business alive by spending my money there. Creating jobs is a complex matter! (I just re-read the thread and realized Ian already said this, I'm leaving it anyway!)

With great respect, I have to say that if I am right, the immigration issue is one of the most misunderstood issues today.

I'm should not be talking about this right now. I am way to close to the topic, it's to personal. It's gets me mad when the subject of jobs come up....lol

I know what you mean. It's so annoying when I am close to an issue, and everybody seems to disagree, but to me it seems so obvious and my natural response is to feel like they are actively causing the problem through ignorance and then I just get grumpy and there's no talking to me.

So that's what you can expect on my bad days.

Getting a student visa is easy, ask the 9/11 hijackers. The reason they do not get student visas is because they are getting in-state tuition whether it is legal or not. You think these left-wing boob hatcheries are going out of there way to see who is really a real resident? They go by whatever paperwork is submitted to them.

Originally we were told that state schools were for poor residents so they can go to school for free. Now state residents are denied admission as foreigners are let in, as tuition rises. So why are poor tax payers still paying for the boob hatchery?

Retailing does not create jobs, it only takes jobs from other retailers. Ever notice when a Wal-Mart comes to town, the downtown retailers are ruined? Taking business from the Motel across the street does not create jobs.

While my family spends most of our time here these days, in the next few years we plan to start spending the majority of our time abroad. I wouldn't call that "all I want to do", but either way does that somehow affect the quality of my reasoning? Am I no longer American enough for you?

And as for my wife, the school she's attending is in the UK -- she's doing law by distance, which she could do from anywhere. But the funny thing about you asking about it that way is that you should actually prefer that she were going to school here, because it would mean more money being spent here, which would help the American economy.

Steve, you point out a lot of very IMPROTANT facts. As I tried to post my opinion I was labeled as "personally attacking individuals" but yet they let certain people post and support the posting of their biggoted views openly. Being an Army Equal Opportunity Advisor for one of the 10 Army Divisions, I will tell you a lot of things in this threaded discussion are in direct violation of many things, laws, and individual constitutional rights. Steve, I love your defense, very well articulated, and very well spoken. You deserve a medal my friend!!

My personal opinion on this, I support the fact if imigrants, Legal or Illegal, want ot go to college LET THEM!! The money goes right back into the system anyways, and all your going to do is to help improve or enhance a work force of the future. Let no man on this planet ever Stop the Education of another. A Fool is a man that possesses al lthe knowledge known to Man, a Fool is his Brother that does also but fails to share it. this discussion was originated about the "Illegal Immigrants" being allowed in schools, I support that decision based on the above statement, but it turned into a justification of the social classification of natural born and immigrated humans. Imagine if the entire Poulation of america shut its Borders and told the world no more immigrants. Or if you come you will NOT be treated equal? What kind of future would that be? and if so, what is the message we are really sending to the youth, our world's future? This reminds me of an old case, something about Brown -vs- the Board of something...hmmmmm.

I have to mostly disagree with Zanger. Although creating a new competing store can take away business from another store the trade off does not generally offset the benefit. For example, you can see why a city with one small retailer would not serve as many people as a city with two small retailers. Of course, diminishing marginal utility really applies here, but the market usually only expands when it still is useful to the market to do so.

The wall-mart example is not quite relevant because it literally satisfies every need in one place at a price that locals cannot compete with leaving locals to try and fight over small niche markets. The laws of competition are not met when dealing with an entity the size of wal-mart.

Local businesses are the best thing that can happen to an economy.

Our foolish immigration laws are driving these poor people to a life that makes them worse off and look bad. It's not their fault the numbers are skewed against them! It's our paranoid low immigration quotas and bad throughput time. Trace these patterns back far enough and the problem usually rests with the same people.

We have got to fix this. We are doing so much damage that could be avoided so easily!

Ok I guess yall do not see what I get to see down here. Stores that no longer speak English, I'm not joking their are store that will not speak English. I went to get my hair cut the other day at a new place that opened up. I walked in and all signs were in Spanish. The two girls cutting hair spoke English so bad that I had to leave. There are meat markets, gas stations etc that are like that. I read a yahoo article the other day about how Hispanic people get to vote six times to every black and white vote. It was to represent the population that did not vote. How is that fair?

This is, naturally, an issue that has no absolute right or wrong answer. You were not being censored for your views. You are also not the only person here who shares the opinion that you are expressing.

As long as everyone's comments are about the issues and not the people presenting the issues, then may the discussion continue. Aight?
