I'll be cohosting an episode of the EdUp Experience podcast next week and the guest will be Dr. Amy Kahn, the President of Taft University. I know we have a few of their alumni here, any requests for questions for her?

Is a web cam required for courses?

Do they have plans to apply for RA status?

Why did they move their LL.M. program from the law school in California to the University in Colorado? Also, did they ever decide on academic colors for hoods?

A distinctive of Taft is that they offer most programs in a choice of two modalities. Directed Study permits Title IV financial aid and entails a standard semester schedule with weekly discussion boards, whereas Independent Study doesn't permit Title IV but is more self-paced.

It would be interesting to know something about how the two modalities compare, in student recruitment, characteristics at entrance, experience, and outcomes, and in faculty observations.

    My question is:

Was N. Osborne your most distinguished graduate?

    (Sorry Nosborne, I couldn't resist). ;)

No, that would be Jerry Falwell, Jr.

The younger brother Jonathan Falwell graduated from Taft Law. The older brother Jerry Falwell Jr. graduated from UVA Law.

While Liberty University offers JD, so they would not use their own product?

Jonathan Falwell received his JD from Taft Law in 2005, so he started his first year of studies in 2001 or earlier. Liberty Law was only founded in 2004.

I would ask if there are modifications that can be made to the Independent Study option to allow for the use of federal student aid. It’s purely self serving, as I would absolutely pursue an MS in Taxation from Taft if I could use federal student aid

Thank you all for the great questions! #TeamDI

Alas, she had a last minute scheduling conflict, so we'll see whether she reschedules for sometime next year.

I would ask her why they do not utilize their currently nonexistent alumni network? There are many successful Taft law school graduates out there who would like to help one another and are great examples of what aspirants want to achieve. Being a Taft graduate and practicing lawyer involves many challenges. I have a helped a few grads over the years overcome regulatory hurdles but Taft consistently neglects one of their best assets - their practicing attorney grads.

Best known grad hands down was Orly Taitz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orly_Taitz

Hopefully, the Trump administration will award her peristence with an appointment to the Federal courts.

I suppose there are circles in which that sort of lunacy and failure are considered "distinguished".

Steve - Not a failure at all but activism. Her California law license is in good standing. Orly took a lot of crap because English was not her first language. As a result of her efforts Donald Trump got his start on the presidency by demanding and receiving an elusive copy of the short form birth certificate. Tatum, S. (2016).
