I passed the Project+ Exam today using the PMBOK and Project+ Study Guide (ISBN 0-7821-4408-x).

I got a 691 and a 499 was required. I was able to pass the 80 questions in 20 minutes.

    I think I am done, I have-
    MCSA (W2K), MCSE (NT 4.0), MCP+Internet, A+, Network+, Server+, Security+, and Project+.

I was thinking about pursuing that certification. Do you think it a useful certification to have?

I do think it would be useful. A lot more useful than some of the other ones I have gotten (Server+ and Security+). Everything is Project related. It the cert itself is not useful, the knowledge gained to pass the test will be.

I'm taking a course on IT Project Management at Bellevue now, and I'm planning on studying for the CAPM exam. Our textbook is supposed to be pretty closely aligned with the PMBOK. The concepts we're learning in class so far are middling difficult... for me, not as hard as multiple regression, but not a cakewalk either.

What's the difficulty like for Project+? The one thing that would kill me is having to memorize massive charts -- for example, exactly what Planning Processes fall under Scope Management versus Time Management and so on. I don't have a copy of the PMBOK but I've got the sneaky feeling it has enough charts to choke a horse. I don't mind working with charts but have quite a difficult time memorizing them...

No charts...just straight forward questions. Read the Project+ Study Guide (ISBN 0-7821-4408-x) and it is on target.

    Fed, Randell,
    Thank you both.

What did I use to study? I used several books, plus the PMBOK. I like Kim Heldman's book the best. The book outlines the information in a more logical format. For me it was a good buy.

I will say this; make sure you are ready to sit for 4 hours to take the test. I am still a little drained. Maybe I am better at farm work (grew up on one) than taking tests, but this was a real chore!

Randell - there are some pretty significant changes in store for the exam so make sure you get updated study material if looking to take the exam.

    Congrats Randell and Steve...

I’ve been looking at the PMP exam, but just wondering if my Project+ can be accepted towards the 35-hr PM educational requirement. Is there anyone have had an experience on this? Would appreciate your feedback.

I enquired at PMI, but they declined to give a pre-application assessment.

    Kind regards,

    Philip

    Congrats Steve.

Why did you do your PMP when you already have MBA ? Just wondering ?

    Thank you Philip.
I do not think the Project+ exam can count for your contact hours. Although it could be a good primer for the PMP exam.

There are some websites where you can do online / self study to get your 35 hours. (pmstudy.com). I took eight, one day classes (in PM) at a local university to count for my contact hours.

I think the goal is to have instructor led education. You really need to have your rear-end in a chair for 35 hours for it to count. Also, please visit the PMI.org website as the exam requirements have *just* changed.

    Hello and thank you stock,

The PMP and MBA are very, very different. I did very little Project Mgmt class work / course work during my MBA, it just wasn't part of the curriculum. The MBA backs up your general management skills, while the PMP is pure project management and borrows from some of the skills learned for the MBA (or general management experience).

I spent three years on my MBA, it was a good experience, however I do have some misgivings about my selected school (to the point I *may* get another MBA). . . but I am getting off point!

The total time spent to get my PMP was around a year. Please note this was much less formal than my MBA, however it did include a large amount of study, classes outside of my MBA and a great deal of reading. Also, please do not think the test is impossible, my time studying was increased due to paranoia and later, procrastination.

If you are interested in doing either (MBA, PMP, MS .. whatever), find a study partner. You will learn more and also create a connection with someone you will always remember. This is good for friendship, competitive spirit, networking and your career.

    Thanks Steve,

I was actually hoping to be able to take the exam before the Sept 30 deadline for PMBOK 2000, that's why I asked PMI last month if Project+ can be counted for.

I might just take their (PMI) online courses for the PMBOK 3rd ed. The thing is it's, I think, 10 or 15 hrs short of the 35 hrs requirement.

Looks great having that "PMP" after your name....

... hoping to have that too...

    regards,

    Philip,

Take a look at this site as well - http://www.rmcproject.com/e-Learning/online-pmp-class.htm

The sad thing is I have a couple hundred dollars of study material that is mostly obsolete! I took my test too close to the deadline to get them sold. The good news is some of my friends were able to get good use of the materials before they too their exam(s).

You might have to do some digging around to find the new study material. Also make sure you fit all the new requirements (I am not well versed on the new requirements, other than the fact they are making it more difficult).

Best of luck and thanks again!

... oh, one more thing. Check the PMI site to see if there are any local PMI chapters in your area. Its a great place to network, gather study information and even enroll in PM classes.

    Steve,

I checked on the RMC website...yes the course satisfies the 35 hrs requirement and self-paced, which I liked. It's, however, $88 higher than the Hampton Group's PMP Prep (4pm.com) - self-paced too.

    I'll try those...

They have a chapter, I think, in Dubai (UAE), but that's 200 KM from where I am.

Sorry Randell we hijacked your thread... ;)

    regards,
