Ah, Charlotte, the place where diploma mills used to go to die.

For a dozen years, it was the location of the FBI's DipScam diploma mill task force. The Mecklenberg County Grand Juries were always well trained to understand the nature of the problem, to do their investigations thoroughly, and, usually, to vote indictments. And the Federal judge for the district had no sympathy for the unrepentant perpetrators. The press called him "Maximum Bob" Potter.

I testified there against mill operators twice, once when the other big courthouse in the Federal building was hosting the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker trial. Talk about your circuses.
