Hi DI, Just found out the University of North Texas (UNT) will be initiating a hiring freeze and other Texas institutions of higher learning are expected to follow. http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/drc/localnews/stories/DRC_freeze_0626.dcb68374.html Quote: "the Legislative Budget Board and the governor’s office sent university officials suggestions on possible areas of reduction that include cutting contracted services, such as adjunct faculty, instituting a salary freeze, delaying program implementation and, possibly, layoffs." Regards,
Strange. I always thought universities hired more adjunct faculty and contracted more outside services to cut expenses. Wouldn't a freeze on hiring adjunct faculty have the opposite effect?
Foobar, I was thinking the same thing, but maybe their logic to decrease the adjunct faculty pool and increase the teaching requirements for tenured or tenure track faculty members = overall savings.
Contracting labor has a value break even just like any other make or buy transaction. If you go too far into the contracting side of things you're going to lose enough in the areas of intangibles and oversight to increase costs. This is likely made more obvious by the down economy.
