Hillsdale College Low-Res Master's in Classical Education Leadership

Hillsdale College is launching its first partly-online program, a low-residency master's in Classical Education Leadership, evolving out of a residential program at Hillsdale. It's chiefly targeted to classical educators at the K-12 level.

Megan Li (in The Hillsdale Collegian) said:

“We actually had graduates of the college who were going to work in classical schools who were coming back to us and asking, ‘where can I go to study classical education at the graduate level?’ And then there was often, as a follow up question, ‘why isn’t Hillsdale doing this?’” [dean of education Daniel] Coupland said. “We wanted to have a residential program on campus here in Hillsdale, because that’s what we do. We bring people together in a room and have conversations about great ideas.”

Coupland said the classical school program stands out because of its integration of rich discipline-specific content into the field of education.

“It’s not just about the process of education,” Coupland said. “But at the same time, there’s an emphasis placed on the idea of education, broadly defined, not just the study of literature, not just the study of philosophy, but all those disciplines offering a perspective on what it means to be a human being.”
