If you don't live in the middle of nowhere, I would recommend that you take the classes in a face-to-face setting. Language online courses and computer-based self-study courses can be useful to some extent and have come a long way; nevertheless, it is hard to beat the interactivity of a good (!) physical classroom.

As it happens, I am working to set up an online Spanish course for high school students. It is absolutely correctly that it does present challenges. In our case, I am looking at using Elluminate or something similar. In other words, there will be an interactive component. The interacters will just not be in the same room.

I would assume that there are other doing this (but I do not know of any).

Florida Virtual School offers languages online. It is a very demanding program for teachers. They are required to contact the student and the parents at least once a month. However, the material is online and the students can contact the teachers whenever they need to.

You could always try Rosetta Stone. They have voice software that helps you speak/match the speaker. If you use self-study and then can pass a CLEP, that would award you up to 12 credits at the 100/200 level and it would be self-paced.
