We Aspen alumni will need to stick together.

I think the degrees and credentials do more to clear the way, I don’t know that they actually help. I’m not trying to be a downer, but at this level it is a political jungle; so to come up through the ranks requires understanding a lot about what other people want and how to negotiate win/win scenarios.

What I can unequivocally say without a doubt is that the QUALITY of education that I have received (am receiving) has helped me out in the past couple years to understand the context for what is going on in business. This is different than ‘oh, oh, but in some crazy case degree A might not qualify you to teach and earn practically nothing’. What I’m talking about is the content and rigor of the material I have worked through. For that, NA and RA don’t matter a bit, and my experience is that in distance programs, the people who have been doing it for a while know how to do it right. In RA programs that emulate what the NA programs have established (like NCU, fyi) the content and learning approach are top shelf. For the ones that try and emulate the classroom structure and just do that over the internet, I personally don’t get much from.

Anyway, the fact that DL education is available, and rather affordable all things equal, is perhaps one of the great misunderstood and overlooked impacts of the internet and the last 15 years of technology advancement.

Congratulations, from a fellow Aspen grad (MS Information Management - 1996). Sounds like a great career opportunity.

    Hey Abner:

I did let Aspen know about this and told them I was okay if they used me as a testimonial. This will also be coming out in the NCU news letter next month under ‘leaner accomplishments’, I just have to find a picture to send them. :)

The point was made somewhere on this board that one of the ways to get these DL programs recognition was to have the graduates accomplish things, write papers, get referenced, what not. I think we all need to start doing that, which is why I decided to go public with this promotion in the way that I am. I am also convinced that my dissertation topic will become a preeminent academic reference, and I plan on publishing it in book form afterwards and also starting to take on speaking engagements on the subject.

Let’s have all of we DL types start to rally and get some positive buzz going around our accomplishments and abilities in the real world!!!!! I am far from the only one with a great story to tell, lets start hearing them!

I did not get promoted to CTO but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night...does that count? :D

You make very valid points Dave. You are absolutely correct. "Real world" accomplishments are what count the most. please continue to do what you do. The accomplishments of a school are always bolstered by the actions of its students. I would suggest you contact Helehn over at elearners.com, and ask about posting a profile on that website as well. It would be extra exposure. I will pm you a direct email address, and you can decide if you want to proceed. BTW, I would email Michael Lambert (a very nice guy) with DETC, he would love to hear your great news as well. Also, feel free to offer him any suggestions/improvements DETC can make, I do. :)

    Take care my friend!!!!

Will do. I was in St. Pete's Beach a couple years ago and accessing the nearest WAP from my 8th floor hotel room. The only way to avoid connectile dysfunction was to lean over the railing outside my room and hold my laptop at arm's length. It was hard to type and keep from dropping my laptop into the pool below...

It is great that the Marriott organization recognizes the value of your doctoral coursework at RA NoCentral U and the NA Aspen MBA. This bodes well for DL schools.

As a current Aspen MBA & MSIS student congrats, I too hope to continue you on for a DBA (NCU or another), I'd be curious to find out how much a leap it was to NCU in terms of difficulty for the courses.

PS: I figured Dlady was some internet lingo for "The (d) Lady." Not that there is anything wrong with that....

Yes, this is one reason I started putting my name in a signature line. I is just creepy when other dudes would start flirting with me or wondering if I was pretty.

    Hi DaWagner:

Going forward you will find we are building the ‘connect anything’ hotel room. You may catch some of the advertisements on TV. We are dedicating a lot of resources to technology innovation in the room and at the property. You will see Marriott lead in this space and a lot of announcements in the next year.

NCU is much more serious about the APA formatting; I would say borderline obsessive compulsive about it. Beyond that, the rigor and formatting of the classes, the work at your own pace, and the one to one relationship with the instructor are very reminiscent of Aspen, in my experiences anyway. Just like Aspen, at NCU you can get as much or as little out of the interactions as you want. I’m starting the comps process (actually posting on the board right now instead of doing my homework). They seem to start to step up the APA obsession even more (I didn’t think it was possible but it seems to be) and they are starting to really come down on the organization of the papers and logical, documented, flowing arguments that blend research and your own analysis.

Keep the faith about Aspen. I do not speak for them or for Marriott on this, but for myself, I plan on making sure being an Aspen alumni means something.

As I was corrected - Holiday Inn Express (I was so close) :D
Actually, I am Platinum with Marriot and Gold with Hilton - lots of days on the road.

I have not hit the comps yet but the APA adherence in some classes is brutal. One class stated, “if it is not right (including work cited) it will be returned without explanation, if it is resubmitted wrong, you get a zero.”

I have gotten all A’s so far except my first class, Research Methods which I got a B. It was all APA and work cited. I thought about dropping out after the first class.

NA degrees = clearly limited utility.

    Define limited utility?
