hello !! everyone this is my first post !! please iam asking about any free online medical courses or certificates as iam medical student .. thanks!!
Johns Hopkins, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Public Health Preparedness Program offers a number of free online courses: http://www.jhsph.edu/preparedness/training/online/index.html I've taken three so far, not difficult, certificate of completion (downloadable) is awarded. They even provide the service of e-mailing your work supervisor that you completed their course, which I thought is kinda cool. I originally found it on an excellent thread started by the poster MichaelGates, maybe you could find other interesting online certificates there: http://www.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?p=307274
https://cmeonline.med.harvard.edu/index.asp?CurrentSection=2 Not free, but it's Harvard Medical School and quite a few are around $10-20.
re: free medical certificates There are many medical and public health certificates under MichaelGate's excellent thread Homeland Security/Emergency Management Free Certificate Courses http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?t=28209 The CDC course on epidemiology is good and there are other courses http://www2.cdc.gov/phtn/ I liked the courses from Pacific EMPRINTS Online http://pacificemprints.sdsu.edu/AboutCourse.asp Good luck.
Wow, these look great. Have you taken any of them? I'm wondering if they are useful for laypeople who are simply interested in improving their own health (such as the lifestyle classes). The certificates look neat. Something that says "Harvard Medical School" with a price tag of $20 sure is enticing...
discounts at Harvard Medical Continuing Education Almost all are FREE for Africans. 50% discount for everyone NOT from: GEOGRAPHIC AREAS: Europe North America COUNTRIES: Australia Hong Kong Israel Japan Kuwait Malaysia New Zealand Qatar Saudi Arabia Singapore South Korea Taiwan United Arab Emirates I wonder if they realize that Mexico is in North America? Note that the certificates are MAILED, so there's no use in using a Third-World address unless you actually have one.
I actually don't. But I'm signed up for one, since back in the days signup for some of them was free. Played around with it a bit, but the M/C tests couldn't get solved just by guessing and my personal and professional interests are not really oriented around disease treatment. I really wish other schools would follow this example and provide continued education at such a great pricetag. On a personal note: I always get reminded on these certs whenever I visit my dentist and see his big blownup Harvard Medical School / Continued Education Certificate displayed at the wall
Not that sure about that, some at least say: "Upon completion of the course you will get a certificate via e-mail within 2 weeks." https://cmeonline.med.harvard.edu/course_descriptions.asp?Course_id=94#accred
Everyone from South America gets a 50% discount. Obviously, Harvard's policy is lower rates for doctors from poorer countries. But Mexico is lumped with rich US and rich Canada as North America, so no discount for them! Always Mexico's misfortune. As Porfirio Díaz said: "¡Pobre México! ¡Tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de los Estados Unidos!"
Well, Mexico has become one of the biggest economies in the world and by no means a developing country. Sure, they have a huge rich-poor divide (so does the US), but I'd assume that medical professionals, the primary audience of those courses, can afford the fees. The same is true for poor European countries such as Portugal and Romania.
physicians in Mexico Mexico's GPA per capita (PPP), probably the most reliable way to measure the wealth of a county, is about the same as South American countries such as Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. While some doctors in Mexico are affluent, in fact, there is a surplus of physicians in Mexico and consequently many are unemployed or underemployed. The majority of physicians work for the Mexican government agencies: Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE). Their pay is quite modest.
Harvard certificates The course I took "Addiction" (excellent BTW) also states on it's description page https://cmeonline.med.harvard.edu/course_descriptions.asp?Course_id=91 that the certificate would be emailed. At the end of the course, however, it said that it would be snail-mailed. The certificates are quite nice.
I couldn't determine what type of work was expected- tests? Homework? Anyone have any idea? I looked at the case study, but they didn't indicate if that was the actual course format.
Yeah, but you can't compare their modest pay to someone in Africa. Plus, Mexico has more inhabitants than Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay taken together, with a population largely living in cities and a good medical and educational system. As far as I know, Mexico has even a pretty good distance learning infrastructure to reach remote areas. So, medical professionals in Mexico are not dependent on programs from other countries.
Harvard I only took one course, Addiction; it used the case method. There were about 8 cases. They were presented one at a time. A patient comes into your office, you're given signs and symptoms plus a fragment of information (eg: brought in by cops after threatening roomate0. You choose a diagnosis from those presented. Th program tells you if you're right why and if you're wrong you choose again. Then you get some more information of the patient, history, self-disclosure, etc. You choose treatment. System tells you if you're right. Etc. Then there's a summary of what you should have learned. Very entertaining.
Thanks for the review! I just took the course entitled, "Prescribing Exercise". As a nurse practitioner I need 15 credits a year to maintain board certification. The course was outstanding! What I found interesting was that it referred to the American College of Sports Medicine which offers online courses that lead to NOCA approved certifications. I am particularly interested in the Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist credential. It's amazing the direction degreeinfo posts lead me. http://www.acsm.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Get_Certified
