Just wanted to pass along a statistics class to those of you that are (like me) total math phobics and statistically impaired but must have a stats class or algebra class for your degree at COSC.

In another thread Papa Georgia passed a tip to me about a paper based correspondence class from the University of Texas - Austin. The same course can be taken under three different disciplines, Psychology, Nursing, or Education. I will be taking it under N347 Statistics in Nursing. It has 14 lessons, one mid term and one final (proctored) but it is open book, standard calculator, and you are allowed one 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper front and back for a cheat sheet for both exams.

I got the syllabus yesterday. The purpose of the class is to teach you to be able to evaluate statistics. They state they aren't concerned about memorizing math formulas but being able to think your way through problems. It doesn't look like a walk in the park to me, but it's the best thing I've found to meet this requirement and I've been looking for nearly 6 months.

It's 299.00 and the book can be purchased second hand for about 20.00. I still expect it to be hard for me since the math portion of my brain doesn't function as highly as it needs to to pass the clep algebra. I also think I'll learn more than if I had to take an algebra class or any other math class where I'd be forced to memorize formulas in order to do the work and has no application in my profession. This should also help me more in the master's I am looking at than algebra would. And that's really what I've been looking for anyway, application to the real world I work in.

Anyway, it might be worth a look for anyone else that is in the same boat as me with math. The folks in Texas are great to work with too. Very very nice. I called them on Friday and I had all the info yesterday, Monday. I'm enrolling this week and I'm still studying for another test, World Populations.

Hope this helps someone. Thanks Papa Georgai for the tip. I owe you one. :D

I really hope that class works for you. I found that class for my wife for the same reason. I thought it would help her more in her real life. She will be very interested in how you are doing since she is planning to take it this summer.
In my earlier years, I took classes that would help me in my career and just some things I was interested in. Now in my later years, I am trying to finish a degree and am taking some classes that are not revelant for me like Biology.Well, I guess Biology is revelant for everbody, but it's not something I enjoy. I would rather be taking a class on retirement at the beach. :D
Good luck in the class and let us know how you are doing.

Thanks Papa, I will be ordering the course by the end of the week. Another nurse may take it with me so we can comfort each other through the process. I really like the way the syllabus is written. The icing on the cake is that COSC will take it as upper level so I'm killing two birds with one stone. Very happy about that. I'll keep you advised how it works out. Thanks again.
